NIAHD at W&M

Any more recent experiences with this program? The most recent thread was from 2017. Especially interested in overlap between its history focus and students who might not want to major in history but are considering a major that could be threaded to the study of history.

Did you see these?

Thanks, I did see 1 and 3. Obviously I would check the school website first! Will read 2, thanks for finding that. I asked here and checked Reddit but didn’t do a broad google search.

Following up after some additional research, the cost is significant. Trying to figure out if this is another pay to play program or if because there is actual college credit earned, it is somehow considered differently on college apps.

Anything you do should be for interest or validation in a school or major, not for an admissions boost. A summer job would be as good. But you wouldn’t learn about the subject or W&M.

Thanks for helping keep this thread alive. Hoping someone with actual direct experience with the program will chime in.

Stumbled upon this as I was reminiscing about my two summers with NIAHD. I spent my Summer 2015 & 2016 with NIAHD, it was a blast. Dr. Whittenburg and his wife were in charge of the program my two years, but I think they have since taken on more of a consulting role. Sarah was my professor one summer, I also worked closely with Dr. Brown & Amy - all are still there and are trustworthy, knowledgeable advisors. Two very formative summers for me that exposed me to legal documents, heightened my critical thinking opportunities, sharpened my research/writing skills, and allowed me a chance to engage in archaeology! (I am now at a well-regarded law school; the skills I learned at NIAHD gave me a solid foundation through college to get me to this point.)

I earned legitimate college credits from both summers and this is reflected on my college transcript. Even though I did not go into American Studies/History - I found the courses very helpful for my International Studies & PoliSci degrees. If you have even a remote interest in history, this is an engaging opportunity filled with lots of fun day trips throughout VA. I would not figure it is any bump for admissions at W&M - I ended up elsewhere - but if you are going for a unique pre-collegiate experience, this is a good fit.

(Despite the glowing recommendation, I can attest I have no current ties to NIAHD and do not help with any recruitment efforts - just a very grateful alum of the program. )
