Hey all. So my name is Dahiam (pronounced as my screen name… dye-am). Now here’s the thing… I’ve always had trouble with my name and it’s difficult spelling. People are always pronouncing it wrong, and I’m always having to correct them. It gets very tiring. I’m going off to college soon, and have thought about adopting a nickname, or if its even worth doing. Now there’s not many nicknames you can conjure up from my name, other than just “D” which is one of my options… my other option is taking up my middle name which is Francisco… or it’s english counterpart, Frank. What do you guys think? Wanna help me out?

If you can’t roll with your actual first name, i’d go with “D.” More people will remember it, and it sounds cool.

My roommate last year’s name was Giuseppe (Jah-seppy), and everyone called him either “G”, or by his last name. No point in coming up with something super elaborate.

My friend/roommate Quentin goes by Q

I actually like D… but was worried it might sound a little tool-y haha. Not sure if others will agree, or if it’s just a personal insecurity of mine haha

D is fine but Francisco sounds more exotic and interesting.

The English counterpart of Francisco is actually Francis. Frank is short for Franklin, which it’s Spanish form I think is the same, Franklin.

Dude, D is awesome. Def go by that its sick

My friend’s dealer is named D, I think Francisco is better.

How about Big D?

Dude. “Big D” just oozes cool. Go with that or “D” it doesn’t really sound tool-y haha

It also implies **magnitude ** and greatness.

Or stick with Dahiam. It’s a rare name and rare names are always the best.

Haha getting a lot of thumbs up for D… man that’s going to have to take some getting used to lol

Haha Big D was actually my nickname in football. Never really stuck as it was just something the other players called me. Only thing I’m worried about is, what if someone or like a girl needs to have a serious conversation with me… “Big D/D… I’m pregnant”… it just sounds funny ■■■■■.

I’m worried that with nicknames like that, no one will take me seriously. Idk, again, it might just be an insecurity of mine since I’ve never rocked nicknames lol, this is why I need you guys’ help.

I definitely think you can go by D or Dye even if you’re afraid you’ll sound like a “tool”. Just introduce yourself as your real name and say “But you can call me D (or whatever you end up choosing)”. I think most people would be totally cool calling you by a nickname and understand why since you have a unique name.

I might find it strange if someone introduced themselves to me as a single letter. “Hi. I’m D,” but it would definitely be a conversation starter, so really no biggie. Go by what you want! :)

I like your name!

But, I guess D sounds…cool? Especially if you’re a jock or rushing.

Why not just go with your real name. Dye-Am is easy to pronounce once you explain it. If your name was difficult to pronounce after multiple explanations then you might want to choose a nickname but in your case, it’d be cool to roll with what you got. Unique names usually stand out from more generic names.

Your name is interesting as it is but I understand wanting an easy-to-pronounce nickname. Francisco is a litte lengthy but it could work, and Frank is easy but not as cool or memorable. D would be a good alternative, and you could even spell it “Dee” like Dee Snyder. Or you could go by Dizzy, which is an awesome nickname. If a guy introduced himself to me as “Dizzy,” you best believe he’d get some immediate cool points.

Haha I’m loving all the ideas. Only thing is, again, I don’t want it to get to a point where I’m not taken serious because my nickname is Dizzy… haha. I have a very strong and dominating personality, and pride myself on being respected and taken serious (please don’t take that as me showboating… I’m not always respected, it’s just something that I consider very important), so I don’t want to adopt a nickname that will not land me in the silly zone. While I’m a cool, fun, social guy, I don’t want to be thought of as silly. If you guys think “D” is good, doesn’t sound silly, and you could see yourself getting to know someone who goes by D, then I might just take that up haha. Again, I’m not used to nicknames, nor have I dealt with people with nicknames (other than like CJ) so idk what’s what in the nickname world lol.

Just choose something you like.

@AUGirl: “Dye” would probably not be a good nickname considering what it sounds like.
