Professors across the nation have once again rated Northern Illinois University’s accountancy program among the elite in the nation. The Public Accounting Report’s 29th Annual Professor’s Survey published in 2009, ranked NIU’s Accountancy program 18th in the United States and one of only five non-Ph.D. programs in the top 20. Inclusion in the rankings places NIU in some highly regarded company including six Big Ten schools (including Illinois) and Notre Dame. Our programs were ranked 23rd in the 2008 Annual America’s Best Colleges edition of U.S. News and World Report.

In addition, NIU accountancy students’ performance on the CPA exam has ranked among the best in the nation for three decades. The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) reported NIU as having the 18th overall highest pass rate in the nation (out of 900 institutions) for 2008 CPA undergraduates. Students from our program posted an overall pass rate of 56.25 percent (i.e., passed the entire exam in 2008). Although NASBA does not release overall pass rates, fewer than 10 percent of all candidates pass the CPA exam. The only other Illinois university to have student performance ranked in the top 20 nationally was Illinois Wesleyan – and the top 20 includes schools such as University of Texas-Austin, University of Maryland-Wake Forest, Brigham Young University, Michigan State University, Notre Dame, University of Iowa, University of Minnesota, and University of Wisconsin.
