Nixing the first choice college

Even Penn State has moved on…

I think this is a big deal for athletes and a minimal deal for everybody else, unless his other schools are DIII. I agree with other posters that this is going on unpunished at most big-conference powerhouses.

I agree that most schools have built their reputations over a long period of time, and athletic scandals should not have an impact on this. One of our kids almost went to Penn State, and we actually coincidentally toured on the same day the sanctions were placed on the team and school. The situation was unsettling but had little bearing on his or our decision. The decision to not attend Penn State was for other reasons. Strongly encourage you to move past the UNC scandal.

Why is everyone assuming the child is a ‘he’? Just asking…

Interesting perspectives again, thanks. It’s been helpful to read them over, and I admit I tend to go over worst case scenarios more than most. I think it’s harder for me to get past the accreditation issue knowing the selection of UNC was more a marginal favorite than overwhelming, but I respect that a choice was made and a parent lens is often different than a 17-year old’s. Have to know when to back off and that’s what I’ve been struggling with. Will bite tongue for now. Agree that the scandal spotlight shifts often - I generally see a college listed in “top stories” at some point during any given week.
