NJ Mechanical Engineering <30k [93/100 unweighted GPA, 1430, <$30k]

Thanks a bunch. I had trouble finding it, @beefeater. :slightly_smiling_face:

I show higher for the NJ schools (than $30K) but perhaps there’s merit or need I’m missing.

That was why I was suggeting others - that are assured.

The big school - real big school experience - close to home - might be WVU (Big 12) or Louisville (ACC like Rutgers).

Rutgers is in the Big Ten.

hmmmm - duh. Yes, you re right. OK, we got Big 10, ACC, and Big 12. So right you are!!!

I’m not seeing any of the NJ colleges under $30K either. In fact, all seem to be quite a bit over. Maine seems like a bargain by comparison.

I’m wondering if there’s a low income grant or something - is why. I like when you know they are under - at least one or two safety valves - in case the in state is miscalculated.

The net price calculators for Rutgers came out at 23,444. And NJIT 24,550. I goofed on TCNJ that came out to be 39,404.

Rutgers’ net price calculator suggests that there can be significant need-based grants for NJ residents, depending on parental income.

Your parents, not you, should be filling out the NPCs…

Nah they just filled in numbers on a spreadsheet i created

is your family adjusted gross income under $80K? I’m guessing not based on the private NPCs.

I could be wrong but I think you need that to be under $30K at Rowan.

Is it lower than $100K - which is what you need to be under $30K at Rutgers - if I’m reading right.

Yea im slightly below 80k

Then you should be covered by the Scarlet Guarantee. Look it up.

I’m surprised then that the BU and Lehigh NPCs came in so high. Unless your parents have significant assets, something isn’t jiving - hence best to let your parents do the NPCs and make sure you do the NPCs and not My Intuition. A lot of detailed questions are asked - that kids likely wouldn’t know.

If they hit budget (and they might with that income), it’s worth keeping on the list…only if they don’t. Note - they still wouldn’t be admissions safeties even if they do hit budget.

May want to consider adding Stevens Institute of Technology to your list. i heard they give generous merit aid. also, SUNY Binghamton, although generally selective for a SUNY, seems to be a little more admissive for OOS students such as from NJ and may provide aid as well. Again, mostly if you are looking for target schools.

I haven’t heard that they’re generous, and getting significant merit aid is probably difficult with OP’s stats. Even if they somehow qualify for the maximum award (which is a stacking of three scholarships) the cost of attendance would still land in the upper 40s. That’s not going to be affordable. And as far as I know, the school isn’t known for generous need-based aid either.

I love the school, but I don’t think it’s a realistic option for OP.

That’s fair but anecdotally i have heard of students getting more merit aid than they expected- but maybe that is the exception rather than the rule. OP can decide whether they want to look into it as an option (not necessarily THE option).

I didn’t do the NPC I just asked my parents to do them all. I’m also confused as to why TCNJ came in 39,404!!! compared to rutgers at 23444. I might ask them to do it again in case something went wrong.

Yes something went wrong. Have THEM do the official NPC- including the privates.

Many think they know the family finances but they don’t.

You don’t want to apply to schools, only to find out they don’t meet your price point.

Dont know how much this matters but i got 1520 on sat
