NMH or Frederick Gunn?

Hi! My son got admitted to 4 schools and is narrowing it down to Frederick Gunn and NMH as a rising Junior. He isn’t an athlete but a jazz musician (trumpet). Both seem to have good music programming. We love both schools, but I think he is leaning more towards NMH because he thinks that will look better for college applications. Although I really love the small Gunn community, I feel he might do better academically at Gunn. Is NMH a harder school?

I don’t know much about Gunn, but am a current nmh parent and am happy to answer any questions

How is NMH social life?

i’m also a rising junior who got accepted at nmh lmk if u end up going!!

Hi!! Thanks for offering to answer some questions! When we visited NMH, we found that all the students were so dispersed bc the campus is so large. It seemed a bit like a ghost town even the school was in session. Like you could go days without seeing some people. Does your child feel that way?

Oh awesome! My son is definitely leaning towards going to NMH. Are you an international student?

No, I am not an international student! I live close to the area so I’d be a day student, but I wasn’t born here or in America. Where are you guys from? I loved the campus and the diversity. And NMH is my second choice probably as of right now before revisits but I might change my mind, are you going to revisits?

Yes we are going to revisit day! We are from Canada. What are schools are you revisiting?

oh cool!! love canada. Canadians are always so nice.

i’m revisiting choate wma williston nmh groton

basically my mom is making me revisit every school i was accepted to even though i already know which ones im 100% not going haha

Wow! Congrats! I’m sure after revisit day, your choice will be clear. Good luck

I think it is a great chance to really envision yourself at the schools. Revisit days really changed our thing. Remember you spent the last several months impressing the schools, now they are trying to impress you. Ask good questions, talk to as many current students as you can (this was very revealing) and look beyond the fanfare. Enjoy. You have great options!

There are a lot of school sponsored social events, pretty much every weekend. There are also many annual whole school events, pie race, mountain days, hogger Olympics. So lots going on for students

Definitely not. But the classes all run at exactly the same time, so if you arrived during an academic period every single person would be in a class. Also afternoons are pretty busy with sports and clubs. Most of the student activity is around the quad, rest of campus is pretty woodsy

Hi! I wondered what decision you made after your revisit and what your thoughts were specifically on Williston on your re/visit? This would really help make our decision. Thank you!

I actually didn’t end up committing to any of them, I got off the WL at my dream school and have committed

You can dm me with any questions though!!

And I do live very close to Williston and have friends/ far family that go, class of 2026, so I can give you some insight if needed
