No acceptances - what now?

I have only gotten 2 out of 3 responses back for the programs I applied to, but I am already anticipating that I did not get into my 3rd program either. I’m a little worried since my parents have already booked a vacation without me to go on during when they expected me to be at the program, and they already told people about my programs, so I am embarrassed to say I was rejected. Is there any other science research programs I can apply to where the application deadline is mid-April or later? Or how can I contact professors in my area to do one on one research with?

Frankly, that was super presumptuous of your parents and I’m sorry they put that kind of stress on you.

If you simply need somewhere to go during their vacation, there’s all sorts of pre-college programs that are not competitive admission, more like summer camps where high schoolers can explore their interests on college campuses.

As far as research, you could try “cold calling” professors that are near you to see if they will take on a high school student for the summer by that I mean emailing them. And it would not be residential

How old are you? Are you able to stay home alone - like you are 17 - or is there a relative nearby/family who can stay with you or monitor you? A summer job would be as beneficial to your record, if not more that a summer research program.

If you’re old enough, I’d suggest that - you learn responsibility, teamwork - get a sense of accomplishment and make money.

Your parents issue is theirs - not yours - and if they have to stay home and be parents - well, then that’s what they’ll have to do.

There are anyone goes programs and you have to get admitted programs - and the latter ones are not easy.

But you have summer options once you get the - who can watch you / ensure you are ok - part out of the way.

I’m 16. The issue is this vacation includes my extended family, so literally my whole family is going and I have nowhere else to go. I currently have a job that I am planning to continue in the summer.

What state are you in? We might be able to help you find local offerings.

Is there a family friend that can monitor you? Can you apply to be a camp counselor or older camper somewhere?

Sounds like bad planning but that’s on your parents.

Have a chat - mom, dad - you’re going to be gone and I either need to find another program, non competitive, or what’s the plan for my care?

This really doesn’t fall on you and I’m sorry it has. It’s a parental responsibility. Maybe you’ll be going on vacation too.

But there are residential programs out there - you’d have to time the date of course and some will be pricey.

Talk to your folks, let them know it’s unlikely you have a home and ask them for the plan. Let them be parents.

Best of luck.

Can you go with them?

It depends on the dates, what field you are interested in and how much your parent willing to pay.
there are some expensive residential programs, not that selective.

look for the tier 3, rolling ones.

What dates do you need? And does it matter where it is?

You could look at this one— my son (college student) was a TA for it last year.

This is a large searchable database of summer programs:
