No close girl friends…what to do about rooming next year?

^ I don’t think we have that type of thing…and yes, most people live in the dorms for at least 3 (often even 4) years. Hopefully by senior year, I’ll have friends that I can move off campus with though

I don’t recommend random roommate, that’s what my son did sophomore year - there was a reason no one wanted to room with the kid he ended up with. If you can get a single I’d recommend that and make an effort to get to know more students on campus.

Go for the single. Maybe there is one available in the same dorm your friend is looking into. That would be a perfect arrangement. I think having a roommate is something everyone should experience for a year or two. It encourages flexibility which is a skill that should be in your tool box by the time you finish college.

For many people the whole roommate things ends up as a power struggle, with one person overstepping the bounds of what the other deems is reasonable. I would agree that rooming with one of your closer friends is not the way to go. Living in such close quarters tests any friendship. Better to have someone that you are not hanging out with outside of the room. That could end of being too much togetherness.

Good point, mathmom. The problem is, that is the likely case most of the people in my position. I’m going to definitely try for a single, or at least rooming with someone I’ve had the chance to MEET first…

My son had a random roommate sophomore year and it was fine. They weren’t great friends, but got along OK. The other student had commuted freshman year and went home a lot on the weekends so that worked out well for my son. That being said, rooming with someone you have met is better and I think a single would be preferable. If you live with someone random, you may not become really good friends anyway. Find an activity or club to join to make some friends. Good luck!

Live in a single if you possibly can.

This happened to me my Sophomore year. I just left the spot empty and was assigned a transfer student. She was great. a 1000x better than the girl I had before. Good luck! I didn’t want to live alone either. (But the next two years I did and that was fine too…)

I had random room mates for soph and JR years. It worked out ok for me both times. No singles were available and I’m not sure if I’d have opted for one anyway. It’s really what you feel like trying and whether you can even get a single. A lot of the folks who had singles seemed pretty happy, tho it did cost more.

I had random roommates for most of my college years. Although most were off campus when I rented a room in various houses. My husband also had random roommates in college . Basically some were good and some were pot heads… How about asking your guy friend if he knows any girls who are looking for a roommate next year?
