No extracurriculars = screwed for college?

I am just naturally a shy and quiet person. I’m not really popular and I stink at sports/talking to people. I can’t sing for my life and was rejected from the drama club at my school. Every job I applied for rejected me because I was too young. So basically the last three years of high school every day after school, I spent about 5 hours surfing the web and listening to music. I know it’s bad, but I can’t change it now.

On the plus side, I have almost all A’s in fairly tough classes. My SAT score is 1790 (trying to bring it up). But I’m getting really worried about my chances at GOOD colleges because I was rejected from the National Honor Society and Student Leaders program at my school for “lack of involvement”.

I’m going to be a senior this fall…Realistically, can I still get into a really good college? I’m REALLY worried…I mean what if all my hard academic work gets met with a bunch of rejection letters from colleges simply because I was too introverted to join clubs?

Also, here are colleges I’m looking at if anyone knows anything about them:

Boston Coll student - 11/1 - 1/1

You might want to attend a CSU, U Iowa or U Missouri.

The most important thing is to bring up your SAT. For EC’s-Volunteer, volunteer and when your tired of volunteering then volunteer some more. BTW my opinion is that EC’s unless truly spectacular are the least regarded part of the application but you should at least have some volunteering hours to fill the hole. GL

I’m sorry to say this, but for the ones I know about there (Amherst, NYU, USC, Syracuse, and Wesleyan) you have next to no chance from what I can see. You’re SAT’s are pretty below average. If you have a 4.0 UW in all AP/IB you MIGHT have a chance at maybe Syracuse, but the rest are high high reaches. Some places you might want to consider are CSU’s, maybe UC Merced, U. of Arizona Phoenix, and other comparable places.

I will give you some more verdicts, but assume everyone else is a reach otherwise.

UMass Amherst: Match
U New Haven: Low match
Syracuse: Match/High match
Quinnipiac: Match
Chapman: High match
Marist: High match

Oh sorry, I didn’t see that it was umass Amherst, I thought it was regular Amherst. That would be a match.

I think you low SAT score would be a much bigger issue than the lack of EC. For schools accepting students below 1800, they probably don’t care too much about EC anyway.

I wouldn’t say you’re “screwed” for college. I focus on mainly academics as well. I’m not really involved in any sports, just academic clubs and band related things. As long as you have a good academic record and a good sat score, most colleges probably won’t look at Extra Circulars. I can’t give you a lot of insight because I haven’t heard much about those colleges. But there are many good schools that accept SAT scores of around 1700-1800.

^ I agree. You aren’t necessarily screwed screwed for college, but you might want to fit in atleast a couple of last minute ec’s this summer or at the very beginning of your senior year! If you’re really low on the ec’s then, I would suggest that you bring up that sat score! Good luck with every thing!

Or try the ACT; there are many students who do better on one test than the other.

I feel you OP, the only ‘in school’ activity I did was knitting club for like…a month o_o
But I volunteered for my church youth group so I guess that can count as an extracurricular…or maybe just volunteering. I’m not sure. But you could always put something that is different on your application like breeding fish. I’ve bred fish for about 2 and a half years now, and yeah I’m going to include it on my application.
