No financial aid based on the SAR for me, what's next?

Hello to all,

I recently filed FAFSA and received a notice that I was not eligible for any aid. Of course it did say in the option that the school I go to might be able to offer other types of grants or loans based on my FAFSA, but that was up to the school to decide. I am pretty sure there will be no additional aid provided to me by the school so what is out there for me? I am in need of a grant or a scholarship that will be able to cover 10% of my tuition because currently I only have 90% covered by another scholarship. In this harsh economy every little bit helps so I would settle for any percentage < or = 10. I would really appreciate it if you have point me to scholarship and grants that I can apply because I really do not like the loans and hate owing money to anyone.

I am currently:
1st Year Undergraduate Student
GPA: 3.94 GPA on 4.0 scale

I am willing to do anything to get additional aid (essay, projects, community work, etc.).

I have been looking through fastweb and have been applying for scholarships there, but because of the amount of applicants I am never able to succeed and earn a scholarship. I have also applied to internal scholarship in my school, but I again I probably won’t get them because of the amount of applicants. I would appreciate if you also give me some tips on what to do to make my essay/application stand out.

If you just need 10%, then wouldn’t a 6500 student loan fill your gap? If you’re a rising soph, then that’s what you can borrow.

How about a job? The vast majority of scholarships are for incoming Freshman

Yes to both comments. Having filled out the FAFSA you are eligible to take out a Stafford loan.

Yup a summer job should yield $2-3000 plus the loan of $6500. You should also look at your college website under scholarships, some colleges have departmental scholarships for upper class students (as long as they are not tied to financial need).

Already have a job and that’s why I think I did not get anything from fafsa this year. In 2011 I had more income than 2010(by the way I still had a job but earned less). I do not want to take loans because it destroys the credit score even if you pay it on time and everything. I already have a excellent score and don’t want to destroy it. I have the money to pay that 10%, but I just don’t want to use it because I am saving to buy a house and new car. I have also applied to 9 internal scholarships (through the school’s website) just like I stated in the original post, but I doubt I will get any of them because of the high amount of applicants. I am really looking for something more like a scholarship that will be able to cover at least portion of that 10% because if I don’t find one, I will have to pay the 10% + transportation + books, which would more. Thanks for the responses though. I am paying for school myself so any little bit helps.

EVERYONE would love to save their money for a house and a car. You have two very good choices…either pay out of the money you have , or take out the stafford loan (which will NOT ruin your credit score).

Taking out a loan does not ruin your credit score. Not paying it back on time does. In fact, taking out loans and paying them back as agreed improves your credit score.

^^^
Iron Maiden is correct.
Stafford loans are great for this purpose as you don’t need a co-signer & virtually everyone ( who hasn’t already received the limit of Stafford/in default) qualifies. Even Bill Gates could get a Stafford loan.

You have 90% of your tuition covered by another scholarship. Taking out a loan for the remaining 10% is not onerous. It will NOT ruin your credit score unless you do NOT pay on time.

I’m not sure where you got the information that your credit score was affected by taking out a college loan. This is not correct information…unless you do not repay on time.
