How come for the high school admissions for CMU there is no history requirement for like 3 or 4 years? Does this mean that if one does poorly in history it is not as important as the other subjects?

no, mostly because CMU was originally founded as a technology and sciences school, so it never stressed in history. it’s probably (I say this with a slight hint of sarcasm) a good idea to have at least 3 years of history/politics tucked under your belt for good safety measures.

for freshmen, the intro to world history requirement only applies to kids in H&SS, and maybe one or two other schools like drama or tepper

Don’t forget that the Carnegie Institute of Technology was also founded as an inexpensive way for workers in the steel mills to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and as a way for their children to get a cheap and high quality education. ;)
