I completed my NYU application a few days ago, and I would just like to get a general sense of my chances of admission.

I’m applying as a media, culture, and communication major at Steinhardt. As far as my essay goes, I wrote about my experiences as a gay youth and how my coming out conflicted with the traditional values of my family’s culture/background. What are my chances?

ummmm…well, to be frank, the
“President of my schools Gay-Straight Alliance
Amnesty International
Environmental Club” part
and the “I wrote about my experiences as a gay youth and how my coming out conflicted with the traditional values of my family’s culture/background.” part …
it all sounds very much like the TYPICAL nyu applicant and current student. So, not to say that you’re not unique, and not to question your beliefs (I can actually relate to your familial aspects), you will be up against A LOT of competition. NYU is used to those, say, more … liberal students, and perhaps they will be looking to broaden their appeal a bit more.
All the same, I wish you all the best!

Like Leonidas said, the essay seems a bit overdone. And even at a competitive school, being in the top 20% is good, but not distinguished. Good luck!

I hope you get in because my stats are so close to yours. I’m not gay though, hopefully that doesn’t hinder my chances too much. NYU is probably going to be either my 1st or 2nd choice (either NYU or Northwestern as 1st). I want to be a journalism and photo double major, and hopefully one day work for a top caliber magazine in NYC like Time or Rolling Stone.

FYI, the labor market for journalism majors isn’t very good right now. There’s a glut of newly graduated journalism majors who are all competing for the same jobs.

I don’t want to be a journalist though. I’m hoping to work at GLAAD or a similar organization so I can combine my two passions (media and GLBT advocacy)
