Some liked his humor, others didn’t. But sad that the last of the rat pack era folks are gone.

It has been quiet here in the cafe. Everyone is off to watch the eclipse.
He made it to 91, amazing as I remember how much he smoked! He will be missed, he contributed much good to the world both on and off screen.
^^^ I think I saw them all driving I-75 south today!!!
I wasn’t necessarily a big fan but knew him best from his telethon which I watched religiously in my early 20’s. I do believe he had a good heart especially for children. It seems his health has been poor for awhile??? I suppose the “pack” is together again. <3
Lewis was a family favorite when I was young; I assume because my parents watched his movies, my brother and I did also. I also watched the telethon’s yearly.
Showing my age…I remember laughing at DeanMartinandJerryLewis (that’s how we thought about them) on television. They split up in 1956.
Well, if we’re going to be honest, Jerry was my big crush when I was 8 or so. “Cinderfella”? Awesome! But “The Nutty Professor”? OMG, I was in love! :"> :x
My OB/GYN was a dead ringer for Jerry Lewis in Disorderly Orderly – and I told him so.
RIP Mr. Lewis.
L-a-a-a-dy!
I am not a fan of slapstick comedy. His nightclub acts contained race based “jokes” and anti-gay slurs. I never liked the way MDA and Jerry Lewis presented people with muscular dystrophy and appealed for donations.
He just cracked me up when I was a kid. I also really enjoyed his MDA telethons too.
Not a fan on so many levels. But I hope his family finds peace.
Dick Gregory.
Sorry, I could never understand his appeal but hope his family finds peace. He lead a long life.
You can’t judge historical figures using contemporary standards. The right question is whether it was obviously offensive at the time.
If civilization continues to improve (a big “if”, I know), then society 60 years from now will probably look back at the early 2000s in horror.
Many of us found him too much, even back then. But he was treasured in France.
Even as a young childI found him offensive. My cousins loved his movies and would be glued to the MDA marathon and there was something that always bothered me about the entire show and about him. Maybe it is good that when we look back, we are uncomfortable, it is a way to move forward and not repeat the mistakes of the past.
I also found him too silly and offensive. I also dreaded the MDA telethon because it was a reminder that summer vacation was over and school was starting shortly.
In the first act of his life, he made countless people laugh. In his second act, he helped raise $2.5B for Muscular Dystrophy research.
While certainly not without faults, Jerry Lewis accomplished more in each act than most could dream of.
Never a fan.
