No more Gourmet Magazine....

Particularly poignant near the Thanksgiving edition. I used to have 20 + years worth…yet more concerns about print journalism…

I wish I could get off of here and read something!

Then may I suggest Cook’s Illustrated? It doesn’t have the nice photos, but it’s fun reading, especially if you love to experiment in the kitchen the way scientists like to experiment in the lab.

Or, if you must have the pretty pictures—and I admit that I love them, too—then *Saveur *may be your thing.

RIP Gourmet. :(

I already get Saveur and Cooks Illustrated…I pay for the online subscription to CI as well. I’ve done Fine Cooking, Food and Wine…others too, that I know I’ve forgotten. They each have their niche. But Gourmet??? We go WAAYYYY back! If THEY couldn’t figure out how to make it work…RIP indeed…also, they are keeping Epicurious, at least for the time being, and I have a LOT of my favorite recipes archived there.

I will miss Gourmet.
Few years ago, my aunt was on the cover …

I’m sure they paid McKinsey well for that sage advice.

Shrinkrap, I feel your pain with Gourmet. I have over 30 years of issues that I’ve saved; some were handed down from H’s great-aunt when she died. There’s simply no substitute or replacement.

Print journalism is in trouble. Conde Nast, overall, was down 8,000 ad pages this year from last year. Talk about declining revenues . . .

I’d second the vote for Cook’s Illustrated. I’m going to miss Gourmet–I’ve been getting it for years. I may try Bon Appetit–anyone get it?

Cook’s is a wonderful bible for cooking; but so much of Gourmet was the great articles. I used to get both Bon Appetit along with Gourmet but I guess the more casual feel of the magazine isn’t what I’m looking for. Tastespotting is an interesting food blog that has similar menu items to Gourmet, from what I’ve observed.

We think Bon Appetit sucks. They dumbed it down.

:(
…

Bummer… Did you see that they consolidated their bridal magazines?

I can’t understand why they didn’t sell it instead of shutting it down.

I’d love to buy the archive and put it all online for a small subscription fee.

I’m so upset. I just subscribed two years ago and thought I was in heaven! (I’m booked up for another two years, too, so there goes my subscription money, I’ll bet…!)

“I’d love to buy the archive and put it all online for a small subscription fee.”

It’s already archived on EPICURIOUS.COM —From what I’ve heard, that is still a going concern.

From the Epicurious website…

Epicurious, Gourmet, & the Future

Ironically, I think that Epicurious might have been the nail in the coffin. Personally, I don’t buy foodie-mags since all the information is free online.

It’s not the same at all. To me, it’s not just the information, but the experience. Forum/internet stuff is good too, but a totally different experience. In the past 20+ years, just briefly, I didn’t get that. Let my subscription go for a few months. And I threw away SO many magazines…Sigh…

^Well if those stacks and stacks of food magazines (that I had kept in the garage and FINALLY threw out ) had a search function----I would have enjoyed the experience and kept my subscription! ;)

You know, that’s why I briefly canceled my subscription! Couldn’t bear to throw them away, but couldn’t really use them. Then came Epicurious! Like so much prozac ( joking!), it allowed me to throw things away with abandon, and know the recipes would still be there if I needed them! I could enjoy them again, and I quickly renewed.

Hmmm…I also subscribe to Cooks Illustrated online, but haven’t thrown THOSE out…
