<p>Okay parents. I’m counting on you for this one. My 2 daughters have long thick hair that tends to wind around the brush of the vacuum cleaner and subsequently cause the motor to burn out.</p>
<p>Previously I’ve purchased, Eureka, or one of the other brands at Target and end up throwing them away after about 2 years. I’m ready to take that next step and invest some serious $$ on a quality product. </p>
<p>Does anyone have a vacuum that they absolutely love? Please let me know. I can’t put off avoiding this any longer.</p>
<p>My husband did the consumers report research and ended up with one of the hoover tunnel something. It’s been about 3 yrs so far. The dog and I shed quite a bit. I think it was less than $200.</p>
<p>skip the large stores and go to a store that only sells vacuums. They will be able to advise you on what is best. Meile’s are great but so expensive. We finally bought an upright that is a commercial machine. The type that hotels use. It works well and has held up so far (about 8yrs with only one repair) and that was to have a new plug put on from the kids just pulling it out of the wall.</p>
<p>We broke the bank on a Meile (sp?) and frankly I am disappointed. Thought it would suck the varnish off the wood floos but it’s as lame as the old Hoover it replaced. OTOH, I absolutely love my Sears shop vac. It will suck your arm out of its socket if you aren’t careful. That thing is awesome!!</p>
<p>I have a Dyson and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it! I like it so much I could do a commercial for them. Go to Amazon and look it up and read the customer comments–that’s what I did. It is so easy to empty the collection bin and no bags. If you read about it, you will learn that all vacuums with bags lose suction as the bag fills. The Dyson does not lose suction.</p>
<p>I also have an accumulated hair problem due to dog hair, and you do have to eventually cut the hair off the internal bar thingie, but it isn’t a problem. Also a little corner broke off the Dyson I have near the front, and I sent the machine back and they repaired it free and paid all postage charges with very nice customer service.</p>
<p>I always hated vacuuming before and now I rather like it with my bright purple Dyson! You can order one from Amazon and I think Target and Linens and Things also carry it.</p>
<p>I’ve never heard of a Dyson, but I would NEVER get a Kirby again! Way too hard to push. Also, don’t ever get an Amway vac - I spent $600 on one, the belt was always breaking and it was impossible to push.</p>
<p>I have the long hair problem with my daughter, too. Since the hair mostly accumulates in front of the dresser mirror, I just scrape the majority of it up manually BEFORE I vacuum. I really hate to cut the hair out of the vacuum! One of those sticky pet hair rollers might be another way to do some priliminary cleaning.</p>
<p>Tookie, I have a Kirby, and it has a power drive and is extremely easy to push. I’ve had it about 8 years – it is very reliable and easy to maintain. The cool thing is that right after I bought it, my son started vacuuming the livingroom 2 or 3 times a week --both my kids actually liked playing with the new supercharged vac. So I don’t know how old your Kirby was - and I don’t know historically what year they added the model with the power drive… but basically the thing pulls itself around, all I have to do is steer.</p>
<p>I’m very happy with the Kirby, but don’t recommend it particularly simply because it is so expensive. I think I paid around $1300 and I’m sure there are reasonably good vacuums available for less – but the Kirby salesman was right about one thing, it is a whole different machine than the typical hoover sold in department stores. It really is the kind of vacuum that you buy and it lasts forever - plus it has a tremendous amount of suction power.</p>
<p>I just got a Dyson and am Extremely happy with it. I will never own another vacuum again. The Hoover wind tunnel we had before was okay at half the price but why settle for okay when you could have a DYSON.</p>
<p>We got the purple one and I am amazed at the stuff it pulls out of our carpets, stuff I didn’t even know was there. (like cat hair I couldn’t see) The canister is very easy to detach and empty into the trash.</p>

<p>I thought I was the only one who has human hair growing out of her carpets! D’s bedroom rug and the hallway runner right outside the bathroom get the brunt of it. Once a week I stoop over the rugs and spend 10-15 minutes literally plucking the hair off the carpet with my fingernails. In the bathroom it collects in drifts. I don’t want to mention the shower drain–it’s a daily battle to get her to take a kleenex and scoop up the gob of hair left there every morning.</p>
<p>Pet hair is much shorter, but embeds itself and is extremely clingy, so I can see how good suction and roller brush takes care of that. But human hair is another matter altogether. The roller brush is just not the right design solution for long human hair. I hate that every time I vacuum I have to flip the monster over on its back, get out an exacto knife, and cut and pull masses of hair twisted around the roller. I’ve broken two belts and now just discovered the plastic belt post melted on my 2-year old Eureka vacuum due to overheating so I have to go buy a new one too. I’m thinking of trying the Dyson and some of the others recommended here, but I just don’t know if better suction/efficiency is the answer here.</p>
<p>Kenmore Magic Blue…reasonably priced, saw great reviews before buying, works handily. This was the model requested by the people who help me clean, so it’s recommended by experts.</p>
<p>Any vacuum with a rotating brush is going to be entangled with hair that is a foot long. Other than manually picking it up before vacuuming, the only other option is a a strong suction on a mini shop vac (Black and Decker makes one) or a vacuum attachment. I wish there was a better way!</p>
<p>Add me to the Dyson love train. I can’t believe how well-thought out that vacuum is - cleaning and maintenance is easy. Love, love, love how easy it is to empty the canister. </p>

<p>I just HATE my vacuum cleaner. It is one of the Hoover wind tunnel ones. I HATE emptying that gross container. Who wants all that dust (etc.) flying all over in your face??? I want them to put bags back in the darn things!!!</p>
