No response from coaches?

I am a volleyball player from central NJ. I am a rising senior graduating in the class of 2013. I made a skills video and sent it out about a month ago to 4 D2 schools and 2 D3 schools. I plan on majoring in meteorology, which is why my choices for college are limited considering I also want to play NCAA volleyball. So after about 10 days, I had only received one response to my video from my second choice school. The coach says my video was good and he is interested enough to stay in touch but that we will talk more after his season because he will soon be really busy. I am excited about this interest. However, I have since emailed all the other coaches to ask if they had gotten my video, and still 2 (including my top choice) have not responded. The 2 D3 schools have said that they have been in and out of the office and will watch it asap. Last week I even called the coach at my top school (a D2 school in Florida), but the coach did not pick up so I left a voicemail. I will probably call again this week if I do not receive a call or email from this coach. Are these coaches already to busy with their pre-seasons to respond to me at this time?

It has been my D’s experience that coaches are hard to connect with. Be persistent. She found that calling is the best way to contact them. It can be hit or miss, so don’t give up. When you speak with them, see if you can set up official visits as well.

Good luck!

Keep in mind that the coaches probably also have a lot of other people emailing them with information, not just you. The more persistent you are in calling and leaving messages, the more the coaches will realize that you are actually interested in their program/school rather than any school that has volleyball and will get in touch with you. Just make sure you’re abilities would match the team’s level.

Keep in mind coaches are headed into their own season right now and are very busy. They do most of their recruiting during the club season in the spring. So, the fact they have not gotten back to you may not be a bad thing. However, if this is your first contact with these coaches you may be a little behind the typical timeline.

My daughter is also class of 2013 and we started the whole process right after her junior season, which gave them a chance to see her play during spring / club season.

Personally I think limiting yourself to just seven schools, especially if they are out of state, is too limiting. I would expand your search and contact more schools. Look at your major and is there something they offer that would be a back door major to your career goals, such as communications major, and a minor in a science field. You should at least have a few more fall back schools you are talking to. We initially contacted every school that made sense in a five state radius and once they were interested we narrowed down based on her academic goals.

Also look at their team rosters online and see if you can get a feel for what they may need for 2013 class. If you are a MH and they have five MH’s that are freshman already chances are you may never hear from them.

But until you get an official “we already have filled our roster for 2013”, which we have gotten a few of those already, keep trying. Good Luck!

I think part of the problem is that you waited a bit too long to start the process. Many soon-to-be seniors have already verbally committed to schools or at least the coaches have a pretty good idea who they want. For the D3 schools you can do a walk on try-out since they don’t give any money for athletics.

consider going to a game of your second choice school and let the coach know your going 2. not too late for many d-3 but you really need to expand your number of schools as SanfordMann mentioned and get going! I would try to call coaches at the d-3’s and tell them you will sending the video. Then follow-up right away with another call. If you dont reach the head coach call the assistant. 3. Consider calling the admission rep to see if they can set up an appointment with the coaches.

I have already gone on an unofficial visit to my second choice school and met with the coach this past spring. He was very nice, and I liked the way he ran his program. He is the one who responded to my skills video and told me that he was interested but would wait until after his season to really get going with recruiting. I plan on calling my first choice school again either today or tomorrow to see if I can reach the coach.
