@SSobick: But isn’t the quality of UF education considered excellent already? At least for a public school…

Anyways, I e-mailed admissions with a subject that said “On The Subject Of A Most Puzzling Question” and they got back to me. This is the whole exchange.

My e-mail:

Hello Admissions:

A few days ago I received a postcard which read “The UF Office of Admissions congratulates you on your recent admissions. Welcome to the Gator Nation!”

While certainly a cute and kind thing to receive, the postcard had a slip of paper attached to it. Said paper had my name handwritten in black ink, and had two $0.25 coins taped to it; one being a 2000 commemorative quarter of the state of Maryland and another one being a quarter from 1995. Needless to say, I found myself nonplussed with this discovery, and my mother, believing me to have been the one to tape said quarters, promptly began questioning my mental stability.

Thus, I ask admissions whether it was them that sent me the $0.50, and if so, for what purpose. If it was merely a show of appreciation, I hereby thank you for your gift.

Sincerely,
Jaime Astorga

Admissions’s Reply:

Hi Jaime. Thank you for your e-mail. Congratulations on your admission
to UF! That is indeed a puzzling question. While we did send the
postcard, it is not our policy to send loose change. Our office did not
attach any money or hand-written notice to your card.

Please feel free to contact me with any further questions. Welcome to
the Gator Nation!

Sincerely,
Shannon Murphy
