No-shows at auditions

Very weird situation at CCM today–a number of kids no-showed for auditions and audition times were moved up two hours on average. We’re on the wait list for Baldwin-Wallace auditions for next weekend but have not heard whether D has gotten off the list. Did anyone experience the same thing at BW today?

We had something like that at Ithaca recently. D got in last minute (like 2 days before audition) because of so several no shows.

Wow we didn’t have anything like that except of course at NYC Snowifieds, for obvious and understandable reasons. Even then, most kids got there eventually.

We maintain a waitlist for audition days that are full, and do let people in off the waitlist (sometimes pretty close to last minute) if we have a last minute cancellation (a day or 2 before). Sometimes we also have complete no shows on the day of the audition. Unfortunately, by then it is too late to offer someone else that spot.

@Lawfang Were these cancellations or actual no-shows? It’s so inconsiderate to just not show up!

They were outright no-shows. The CCM admissions people seemed quite surprised by how rampant it was yesterday.

CCM question: do you have to be admitted acedemically to the university first before they tell you your artistic decision?

Yes… Must apply to the university. Common app, as I recall.

@destiny95 - two years ago, my S was not notified of official University of Cincinnati admit until WELL after he was rejected from CCM. It was almost like the university admissions office had a “hands off” policy until CCM made it’s decision - we received VERY little communication directly from them through out the application/audition process, except for university merit scholarship stuff. Then he got the “would you consider another major?” letter.

Yes! At my Elon audition there were at least 10 no-shows. It’s so frustrating because I know of several kids who couldn’t get Elon auditions because they only take 60 kids each audition day. The fact that kids didn’t show without even sending a courtesy email was VERY frustrating.

That is bad. No wonder those in the admission process get a bit jaded. We have always bent over backwards to try and stay on top of things, follow directions etc etc and if anything changed to let schools know ASAP for the schools sake and any other applicants sake. We have had some odd audition dates and if we could have changed based on cancellations we would have. We simply took what we got and tried to make it work.

This is, indeed, too bad. But let me add another perspective. My son has one more audition to go, but he has decided he would rather not attend. I have to add that it is a school I added to his list, not one he chose. I keep telling him it’s a great school and am waiting for him to reconsider. In the arrogance of youth, he thinks he’ll get a spot at a school where he has already auditioned or that he will take off in a different direction. He has also determined, with a cynicism beyond his years, that the school has probably already made most of its decisions. I’m going to hold out a couple more days before we either cancel or pump up the enthusiasm to attend. I hope that is time enough to open his audition spot to someone else who may be waiting. Sometimes, a kid needs a few rejections before he or she realizes that every opportunity is worth following up. Sometimes losing that opportunity is the lesson that needs to be learned. I agree it is very poor manners to be a no-show and I will not allow my son to be that guy. But I understand how people um-and-ah before attending that last audition, leaving it too late to cancel.

You are so nice in your posts that I bet you would let them know ASAP, even if it was the night before and that could still open that slot up to someone else. To just not show up without any notification seems not the best and not polite. Even if they could not fill the space it is polite to those at the audition to let them know. Maybe they can bump everyone up a bit and send all those judges and the students helping home an hour or more early, or at the very least they can have a coffee break they were not anticipating:):slight_smile:

Thank you @sbc! I have to add, too, that both my son and I are emotionally exhausted from a long audition season, peppered with academic responsibilities, sports events, endless rehearsals, concerts, constant homework, and travel to and from auditions. Not to mention rejections that negate the efforts made for earlier auditions. From a student’s perspective, that last audition may be the hardest of all.

@claire74
I get it!! You really are a lovely poster. We are tired here too…:slight_smile:
