Has anyone else noticed that there is no “squee” thread for this years soon-to-be freshmen rising artists? Where are the moms? Where are the kids??

there were few film moms gone back to parents turf or certain school forums.
there is mom4 active, UK-USmom, etc but I don’t think they know each other that well.
I guess this year moms are quiet/ modest / kept to themselves / less of dilemma /financial strain
kids are done and left us…as they should be. GSH, gabby chan, annay, destiny etc… I know where they’d be none of my business but nosy nosy. all good kids. have a blast!!
let’s not forget noodle and Brown. yeah, good luck.

last year was just some special loud year for helicopters. good for us all.

I’m here, but don’t know about other parents of incoming freshmen. It would be nice to share foundation year experiences if others wanted to participate. We are crossing our fingers that after all the analysis and visits, D made the right choice. Actually, I think she made up her mind long before she applied. She just needed the validation of acceptance and scholarships.

I’m here too. End of the school year was hectic, I’ve hardly sat at the computer these last few weeks. You all have been really helpful through all of this - I’m headed to MICA (illustration) - hard decision but I loved the feel of the school and the area. My mom keeps telling me we have to start getting “stuff” together but I feel like I have just finished high school and I have lots of time. I have to bring my own desk to MICA, anybody have suggestions for a cheap but solid artist’s desk? I am assuming I will get one of those assemble yourself pieces of furniture - have it sent ahead to one of my mom’s friend’s house in Baltimore so I will have more room in the car for other things when I go down.

Hey Goodschool - D is going to MICA in Illustration too. We’re flying out so will have to get a desk there - but I don’t think there is much room for it. The rooms are pretty tiny and it looked like every inch of perimeter space was taken by a bed, closet or dresser. Her drafting board will not fit, that’s for sure!

Packing tip, invest in space bags, those plastic bags where you such the air out. You can get a ton of clothes in one suitcase with those. Just zip the suitcase really quickly!!! Investing in these freed up a lot of extra space for us.

GSH lives!! (dance)
it seems there are bunch of MICA gals this year.
if you got chance report how things are, yes? it’s OK to back-stab at each other. I won’t tell. LOL
say hello to your smokin’ hot mom!!!

I’ll squee. I decided to go to College for Creative Studies. I’ll be living on campus even if it is 45 minutes from home. Currently I started applying for local internships and have had some calls back because of mentioning the school so it sounds like the local reputation is amazing.

I’ve got all of my classes set up - I’m taking Typography 2, advertising for graphic designers, 3d design techniques, 3d design concepts, and a class called “Ways of Knowing - Text and Image” which is almost like a philosophy class. M
y AP and transfer classes got me out of almost everything first semester. I’ll be majoring in advertising and minoring in graphic design.

I also need to bring my own desk there. I was looking at [Save on discount NEW! Utrecht Studio Set, 4 Pieces & More Table Sets at Utrecht](http://www.utrechtart.com/dsp_view_product.cfm?item=47116)

I’m still lurking. I’m another going to MICA for illustration. I’m very excited!

annay
so you solved credits issue?
gabby-chan
how is your hot dad?

there there redbug now we got squee thread!!

As far as credits go I’m super super close. I had a high school web design class that is supposed to transfer in, but the paperwork is super difficult and I’m not sure it ended on the right person’s desk. I am taking 15 credits first semester and 18 second (thats normal credit load for sophomore level). I am one class short of finishing my first semester so I may just take the lagging class over the summer there.

A lot will depend on what happens this first year.

D1 had a folding drafting table that worked just fine in her room. It turned out that the biggest problem was with lighting. Be sure to get bed risers. Her room mate that had to fly in had a desk that was pretty much a standard size desk. She had the tall half of the pseudo bunk beds (they didn’t use bunk beds) and she was able to store an amazing amount of stuff under her bed, footlocker, a couple of under bed bins, a chest (I think it was her night stand thing at one point). I know she even had enough room to set up her printer under her bed. She had also brought a cube storage cupboard/shelf thing for art supplies that she had room for next to her desk. for some reason both she and her room mate had their own trash cans. go figure.

Thanks, glutenmom! I forgot that they could put things under the bed and we’ll look for a folding table (but it will never get folded methinks…). I am trying not to drive myself and everyone around me crazy obsessing over the complete list of stuff we will need to bring and buy there. These ideas are great and planning for them really minimizes the running around when we get there.

So D, goodschool, gabbyness at MICA. Annay at College for Creative Studies. Anyone else out there a parent of or student going to art school in the fall?

I wonder if this will load; it shows the bedroom at MICA with the raised bed. If it works I’ll try to post a couple more.

Darn, it just shows a fb link. I vaguely recall there being someway to post a photo with a link from fb. I’ll have to poke around some more.

If your D is anything like mine, you are right, it will never get folded. It will be forever covered with pencils, Copic markers, tubes of paint, assorted paper, and her favorite tchotchkes. I would be suspect of any art student that folded and unfolded her table everytime she wanted to work. Speaking from personal experience only, whatever her work area looks like at home, is what it will look like at school.

Redbug–oy, my daughter’s workspace at home is her bed! I can not get her to use a table and it is ridiculous! Luckily, I have one more year to train her on this before she goes off! Right now she is in Tuscany on the MICA program. They arrived yesterday and I am waiting to see a facebook post or something, but nothing yet! I am hoping that she has a great time and gets a few good pieces from the experience. I know that there will be lasting impressions too, which is a great thing. (sorry for highjacking)

phillyartmom - thats pretty much what I do, however I go in the basement and use the ping pong table and a few bright lamps if I’m doing large messy projects. My desk in my room is perfectly clean and I do use my large monitor once in a while. I bet my parents regret getting me laptops now.

Crap. MICA just emailed me to say that they have limited housing space for transfer students this year, and that I should start looking for housing. I’m more than a little ****ed since when I was touring the lady I spoke to said that no transfer student who wanted to live on campus was unable to do so before. Gah.

I’m here too. I’m a mom, not an art kid. The end of the school year was nuts and then we were on vacation.

Matt’s going to MICA for painting. But to his dismay, he is living at home. While they offered him decent scholarship money to go there, it was not enough to cover full tuition, let alone room and board. And since we only live 20 minutes away (in traffic), for now he’s going to be at home.

He just received his advance placement letter and was thrilled to find out he placed out of first year painting, drawing, and photo. Yay! 9 credits we don’t have to pay for. :-)

Phillyartmom, your daughter is going to LOVE the Tuscany program. Matt went last year. Is Joe Giordano still on the staff going on the trip? He’s amazing! Matt graduated from an art magnet high school and he is the chair of the art department there.

yay debbi
I wanted name the name but wasn’t sure if you are still in the game.
awww Tuscany…
I still got first photo good ol’ Joe forwarded to all parents the day they started. sat at sun drenched loooong open air breakfast table. flowers. trees. I don’t know how to detach from e-mail to share.
I don’t think it matters since none of kids are recognizable.

oh
do you have extra bedroom to spare? this here gabby-chan is a doll. I garanteee.
and her dad is hot.
