Nobels 2010

I was very pleased with the choices of this year’s science Nobel winners so far, but this prize in chemistry,… oh wow. This trio desrved the prize loooong time ago!

I’m so happy for them! Congratulations!!!

Here is a document with nice pictures for the chemistry nerds among us:

“The palladium-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond forming reactions developed by Heck, Negishi and Suzuki have had a large impact on synthetic organic chemistry and have found many applications in target oriented synthesis. Their widespread use in organic synthetic applications is due to the mild conditions associated with the reactions together with their tolerance of a wide range of functional groups. These three cross-coupling reactions have been applied to the synthesis of a large number of natural products and biologically active compounds of complex molecular structures. They have also found applications in the fine chemical and pharmaceutical industries.”

I am so NOT a science person, but I really enjoy hearing the NPR correspondents trying to explain what these folks won for, in a way that they hope we can understand.

This summer D1 and I went to the City Hall in Stockholm where they hold the Nobel Prize dinner every year. It was very impressive. We agreed that we will have to pick up our games if we ever want to get invited. Or provide extra support for D2, who is far more likely than we are to ever win one. :)
