Hi, son will be transfering to C this fall, and I have some questions re: how noisy is ME train ,particularily at night, for students living at Stoney or Blackstone? It’s interesting that the train line does not show up on any of the normal U of C maps, but does show up on the Bus presentation maps.

I spent 11 years living across from train tracks, and I actually found their sound rather soothing. I imagine that once you get used to it coming by, it’s not a problem. Everybody needs to get used to some sounds (for me, it’s the urinal in the bathroom that flushes itself every half hour or so).

I haven’t lived in the undergrad dorms, but did spend 2 years in graduate housing at international house which is less than a block from the Metra tracks (just off of the 59th street station) with windows that looked out on the trains. I could barely hear the trains come through at all - maybe a little bit louder than the regular noises made by street traffic. The buildings were constructed in the good old days with lots of heavy brick and stone so they keep out a lot of the outside noise. I wouldn’t worry about it!

I have a friend in Stony and, while he has mentioned the train tracks, he never seemed overly cynical or complained much about it. So, the tracks should not be much of a problem is my guess.
