Nominations

Socaldreamers- Interesting that you mentioned the time lapse in posting the nomination at NA. Same here! Our son received 3 noms, the MOC office submitted all 3 last Mon. AFA & MA showed up immediately & he’s already received the official offer of appointment from Army. Nom not even displayed on Navy’s website yet, the lag is puzzling.

Hey! Just wondering if there’s anyone else ‘out there’ that has received a military related nomination NOT including a presidential one.
I got one back in September under the category of ‘Child of deceased or 100% disabled veteran’.

I Just wanted some idea as to how many people compete for an appointment under this nomination.

Good Luck to everyone!

Emily

I just received my second nom from Sen. Burr (NC)! My first was from former Rep. Taylor (NC 11th). I know I’m not a huge force on the boards, but I’d just like to thank everyone for posting and answering so quickly. This has been a big help not only to me, but I’m sure every candidate who had gone through the process. This is my second time through, so hopefully I’ll be getting the fat packet sometime between now and April. :-)

e11wemzer-sorry not to answer your question. all the military related noms ive had experience with are from the prez. good luck with the appointment!

-Jason

Congratulations! And Good luck, Jason. Here’s to fat … packets!

To all - as there have been comments on ‘turnaround time’ on information being reflected ‘in the system’ I’d be interested in the perspective of others on when to follow up on information sent in to update your file. Given that files are being reviewed now in larger numbers, how much time do you think is reasonable to call to follow-up if it is not ‘in the system’ - I’m thinking 10 days…

If my nom isnt on CIS by the beginning of next week, I’m gonna give admissions a call just to make sure they’ve received it from the Senator. So, yeah, I’d say 10 days is reasonable.

Just another note about transcripts…
For all you college students who havent sent in your fall semester grades or have done so recently, be patient with it to show up in CIS. I sent mine 3 or 4 days before Christmas and it didnt show up unitl 10 JAN. Even considering the holiday, that is still a long time to wait. According to an admissions exaimer that I spoke to, transcripts go to DC to be screened first, then to the Supe’s office where they can possibly sit for several days to a week before being taken to the admissions office. not sure if this is true of all documents sent or just transcripts…

-Jason

Jerseynbg-

I concur with MightyRooster. 10 days is reasonable. My sons nom finally appeared yesterday, however it reads that it was received Jan. 8th. And we never doubted the the MOC office, when they said it was submitted last Mon. We can’t help but wonder if the system auto-updates every week.

I was just doing some googling research and found this website u must type in exactly as I have here www.opencrs.com/rpts/RL33213_20051229.pdf

It has to be typed in this way at least for me to get to it. Hope this helps especially page 8.

Does an offer of appointment appear anywhere on the candiate’s web site? Is there a call from USNA? Congressman? BGO? A packet in the mail? What am I looking for next?

No, no, maybe, maybe. Last 2 were “no” for us, “yes” for others. Got an immediate letter preceding packet from MOC nominator tho.

Packet arrives with nice folderwith 3 items in that folder … pic of the bay/Acad, letter from the Admiral, and certificate of appointment. And packet includes a bunch of new instructions … get your dental xrays, any update on DoDMERB/medical, here’s your new PT regiment, police background check form (for duplication with multiple municipalities), request for birth certificate (or something that verifies you are who you say you are (must be an original) and of course a form requesting candidate’s acceptance/decline of appointment. And there’s a folder that reviews the expectations of a Mid … for careful review before checking that “I Accept” box on the form.

All for return by May 1.

An offer of appointment does not appear on the CIS. The USNA will notify your MOC of your appointment, and ususally delays sending out the official appointment for about a week to allow time for your MOC office to call you with the notification (some offices will call, some will not). The appointment will follow in a blue padded folder in your mailbox, followed by the instruction packet listed above (lots more paperwork!)

If you have been selected for NAPS or the foundation program in leu of an appointment, there will be a letter to that effect, along with additional paperwork/instructions.

If you have been passed over for an appointment, there will be a letter sent to your home with a kindly worded message, most often encouraging you to consider reapplying. You may also receive a call from your BGO as to what needs to be strengthened on your application should you wish to reapply.

Some BGO’s will call you, some candidates call their BGO with the news, some calls never get made either way (this is highly individual). Our son wasted about 2 minutes before sharing his news with his BGO, more a reflection on the amount of contact between them over time leading up to this point.

There will be an acceptance card, “should you decide to accept this mission,” which must be returned by May 1st… allow extra time for this to get delivered to it’s destination.

Congrats to the class of 2011…getting that much closer to the end of plebedom for the Class of 2010!!! :)

whistlepig and others - your need to fill out paperwork once you accept your appointment will jump exponentionally yet again - sometime in May expect another 40 pages of stuff to fill out, including a security background check, insurance stuff, paperwork for I-Day, etc.

navy2010- what is the process with recruited athletes? does the coach notify you of the appointment or does your congressman still do it?

In our son’s case, he heard from his coach. I don’t think this is always the case. I believe they are told to hold back so the MOC can break the news. Our son never really heard personnally from our MOC. He had a presidential nomination, so in the end, we could pretty much put 2 and 2 together. We just weren’t sure who Navy was using as his nominating source. It turned out that it was our congresswoman.
My husband was class of 81 as well. Good luck to your daughter!!

Thank you beam6. Our daugther also has presidential nom . and the congressional nom. .We know her package was presented yesterday to the board but no word as of yet. Do you know how long it usually takes to hear either way ?

Wow! go navy81, you must have an inside track to know when they are reviewing her file. Did the admissions officer let you know? The wait is harder than the months of putting the stuff together.

The coach notified us . She was suppose to go up last week but was pushed back to this week . Still not sure if it went this time or not .

That is great that the coach is keeping you updated. Sounds like they are really pulling for her. I feel for you all. It is no fun waiting. I feel sick just thinking back on the process. We also had to deal with two medical DQ’s. It was not fun!
Hang in there. Sounds like it won’t be much longer!!

If the news was positive yesterday, my guess is that your MOC was notified yesterday. Timing on ours was … file reviewed and appointed, MOC called that day, letter sent that day and received on Saturday. Talk about being dumbfounded.

So … maybe in tomorrow’s mail if your MOC office is quick. Or maybe a call today? Just speculating, but I’d guess that regardless of coach’s involvement and keen interest, the MOC would be given the shot to be the bearer of good news. Come Monday, all bets are off … IF they came to a decision on Thursday … I’d bet.

Good luck! Here’s to hearing!!

it was different for each place…but the coaches, in our experience, while they may “hint” at your status, the final word comes from either your MOC, or the USNA…not your BGO or coach. The USNA will allow a week or so “gratis” for the MOC to offer the first word of congratulations- some will follow through, others will not… but the BGO will wait (at least ours did) until the letter comes… what he did do was “step up” the calls… we knew the appt was coming because our son would hear from his BGO every-other-day for “whats new- any questions?” calls… hmmmm…

Please keep in mind our son got his appointment following a PG year…

For the USNA class of 2009, his BGO told him he was being referred to the foundations program (they wanted him bigger and stronger)…he then heard from the foundation directly, with the official letter from USNA with the offer following that.

At USMA, the coach actually kept him updated weekly as to where his file was in the application process, and that he should expect “a nice green folder” in the mail by Thanksgiving…then called again to make sure it had arrived! (It had, and it was impressive!)

He had a similiar experience with USMMA, where the coach kept him updated and that he was “good to go”…but the final offer came from the admissions office…

then there were the other schools… coaches calling weekly… it got tough for awhile…especially as Navy was his first choice, and the very last school he heard from…at those schools, the coaches were very forthcoming with the offers of admission…but again, keep in mind he was being recruited at several programs, and no doubt each knew who was also showing interest…

what did happen is that 2 of his civilian schools kept upping the anti…at one school he started with a 1/3 scholarship, that ended up being a full-ride offer by the end… at another, it was a full ride from the get-go…the tables were a bit reversed, as these coaches wanted to know where they stood in his decision tree…while he was sweating out hearing from USNA…

in the end, he turned them down and went USNA with the foundation program… USNA was his first choice, and he felt it was worth the extra-year if that was what it took to get in, so he notified the other academies and schools around March of his senior year (a long time for a coach to wait)…

His BGO (he now had 2, the one from the previous year and the other the head of the foundation program) both kept in contact reguarly and kept him informed of next-steps for the “seat that was his to lose” in the class of 2010…the foundation folks walk those applications through the admissions board themselves (for the Class of 2010, that occured on April 6th)… and his foundation BGO called him the very next day to tell him the appointment was “in the mail.” It was a long wait…and a long time in comming…but so worth it!

In retrospect, the foundation offer was the best thing he could have done…matured him physically, mentally, and even strengthened his academics in calculus and chemistry…both of which are plebe killers…he flew through plebe summer, and so-far-so-good with plebe year…and while the class of 2011 will be on a count-down to I-Day soon, you can bet the Class of 2010 are already counting the days to Herndon!!!

Hang in!! It’s a bumpy ride, but what a journey!!!
