non-academic classes

This year, althought 6 out of 7 are pretty hard classes, I got a pottery class (semester) and a film class (semester). I pretty much had no choice besides these because my schedule would have been majorly screwy otherwise, and I didn’t want to take classes out of my interest zone (accounting, etc.)

What does this look like to an adcom?

I don’t think an adcom is going to look down on your transcript just because you took 1 out of 7 non-academic classes. As long as you’re taking those 6 hard classes, I’m sure you’ll be just fine. Perhaps, the adcom might think you’re “well-arounded” or “unique” by taking just a little bit of electives.

Yes, it might make it seem that you have diverse interests, rather than you focusing your entire time on accounting.

Oh. Well, I meant accounting was out of my interest zone. I’m more into history and english.

oh, good lord! NO ONE is going to care that you took an elective!! it’s not like a school is going to turn you down for having 1/7 classes not be an “academic” class…

in fact, NOT taking arts classes is more detrimental (IMHO) to the admissions process than taking one. now, if your schedule was like 3 arts classes and 4 academic classes, and you weren’t planning on applying for an art major, then there may be a problem. but arts classes are important!

ReninDetroit, if someone was taking 5 of 6 possible classes AP, and for the 6th class could choose either another AP class or a non-AP art class, which one do you think would be better for admissions? I will be in this situation this year, and both would be equally fun/interesting/educational for me. I’m interested to hear your opinion. (btw, I’m going to be a science major, I think)

5 AP classes is fine. I mean, you would be challenging yourself more with the 6th but you won’t be rejected from college because you took 5 instead of 6.

I don’t even think that it’s necessary to take 5 AP classes…that is insane.

I hope no one assumes that I am obsessed with going to the Ivy Leagues or any top college for that matter because I don’t even know where I want to go. Therefore, I’m not doing things to impress any specific admissions committee. All I wanted was to not push myself out of chances for any good college. I, for one, thought taking a pottery class would seem lazy and self-indulgent for a potential history major.

I’m taking IB Art because art, especially photography, is one of my main EC’s; it’s a genuine interest, and not something I’m taking because I think it’s an easy class (it’s not). As long as you can articulate why you chose those specific classes, I think you’ll probably be fine.
