Hi i was wondering if i would be approved for the non custodial parent waiver:
my dad has been in and out of my life and i’ve never lived with him and he was abusive towards my mom. she took me away when i was two and let me meet him when i was twelve, since i was young he’s contributed $60 a week through child support (at most)
You will need to apply for a non-custodial parent waiver for colleges that use the Profile or their own form requiring the non-custodial parent info. You might get a waiver at all, some or none…no way to predict. You will need third party documentation that your dad should not be considered.
For schools using only the FAFSA, your dad’s income and assets won’t be considered…I believe…@Kelsmom any changes for students like this who have limited non-custodial parent contact?
If your parents are not married to each other, you won’t need to provide any information for your father on the FAFSA . There is a question about child support received that your mother will need to answer, if she received child support (on the 2024-25 draft FAFSA, the instructions say: Enter total amount the parent received in child support for the last complete calendar year).
For Profile schools that require the NCP information, you should call each school to explain the situation & request a waiver. There is no guarantee you will receive a waiver from any given school, but you should ask.
