Has anyone ever had to submit the Non-Custodial Parent letter from a third party and from the student/parent?

I went to check my OASIS today to see if I received my financial aid package but all I saw was this…

I’m just not exactly sure why they would need TWO letters, and I’m not sure how in-depth they want these to be? For Northeastern’s Non-Custodial CSS waiver all we had to do was fill out a short request form…

I had to submit those letters. What is your question exactly?

Chocorette: The non custodial form is filled out by the custodial parent. It’s pretty straight forward. It’s downloaded from the site in “downloadable documents”. It replaces the non custodial CSS Profile that USC does not require.

However, if you have had no contact with the non custodial parent, or do not know of his/her whereabouts etc, it means that they require a proof of that, through a letter from a third party…usually a lawyer or priest etc, or someone credible that can vouch for the fact that a non custodial parent is not around at all. Is this your case? If so, might be best to contact finaid to ask them exactly what would be acceptable in terms of these extra letters.

12layla12: I’m just unsure how lengthy these letters should be, and to whom they should be addressed? I just wrote out a few sentences, but I’m not sure if this is substantial enough.

Sequoia: I remember my mom filling out the non custodial form back when we did the FAFSA. We thought that was all they would need, considering the fact that my mom has been filing as a single parent ever since I was born.

I highly doubt the length matters, so long as you answer all the questions and address all your specific circumstances. My mom wrote her custodial parent letter and it was about a page, single spaced. We then had my uncle write the 3rd party letter and that was half a page, single spaced.

If a few sentences were enough to significantly stress your situation, then I don’t see why that wouldn’t be sufficient. My advice is if you think it’s too short, add more!

Hope this helps!
