My rising senior just had a call with a D3 Track coach and I wasn’t listening and am trying to get clear and concise info from him. He said the coach told him to apply ED and that he would love to have him as part of the team but the connection wasn’t great and he wasn’t totally sure if the coach meant he was slotting him. I think my son should draft an email as a follow up to the phone call. This is a top choice school and he plans to apply ED but I want him to ask about the coach’s support in the admissions process as he is a bit on the bubble academically. Could someone who’s been through the process help us draft an email or at least some questions to ask? This is new to us. Thank you!
The draft email @BKSquared posted in the other thread covered most of the bases.
I think it’s also fine to text and just ask for another call to answer a few more questions.
It’s up to you/him whether a parent should be involved.
A couple things you might ask your son: no talk of prereads? Did the coach mention that he needs to make a decision?
The reason that I ask is that a simple “apply ED, we’d love to have you” might or might not indicate support. Usually there’s a sense that the coach is providing something of value, needs some sort of decision on some sort of timeframe, and part of that involves ED. Maybe all that was part if it and you just didn’t post that.
ETA: also, don’t forget to thank the coach for every chat and communicate enthusiasm for the program, school, etc. (seems obvious but can be easily ignored).
