Hi!

I am basically done all my college essays and applications, but my college counselor suggested I add another reach school. However, I feel that most top tier schools are too preppy for my liking.
Any recs for schools with an acceptance rate lower than 25% that aren’t characteristically preppy?

Thanks!

You should only add schools that you actually want to attend. I presume you have a list of 6-10 that you do want to attend. That’s fine. Don’t apply someplace just to see if you can get in - that advice from your counselor seems suspect.

You will get better suggestions if you can narrow your search (perhaps by geography or intended major). If your main criterion is “non-preppy” that could either go nerdy or “liberal”. So MIT, Harvey Mudd or Carnegie Mellon might be a nerdy reach. Lefty schools might include Oberlin, Grinell or other midwestern LACs.

I would recommend my alma mater, Rice. Great school and it isn’t very preppy at all. Rice doesn’t have frats either

Reed. Farthest thing from peppy there is.
