Non-Science Depts

Hi,

I’ve heard a lot of talk about Rice being known for its top-notch science programs… how about its liberal arts programs (philosophy, linguistics, etc.) ?How does Rice rank in terms of the quality of this type of education?

Rice’s philosophy program is exemplary; the professors who teach at Rice are active individuals who research and publish numerous texts. They also have many guest lectures from famous philosophers, the most notable being the late Jacques Derrida. Martha Nussbaum has also spoken a Rice, and it is rumored that Jurgen Habermas also made an appearance. The courses are also structured in such a way that graduate students often take the same courses as undergraduates, so the level of teaching is somewhat constant.
