Non Top-Tier Schools For Hedge Funds or Investment Banking

I know I would not get in to any Ivy Leagues or NYU or any of those “recruitment” schools for IB of HF. Maybe when I decided to pursue a masters degree I would be but not at this point. I am currently exploring other schools good for finance. I have looked at UCLA, UCI, U of San Fran, U of Oregon, CSUSD. I want to hear what other schools you guys would suggest.
Also what is better? To major in Economics or Bus Admin with Finance?
I am currently very confused because I have not decided on a school yet.
Should I go with UCLA for Econ?
Should I go with U of SF or Econ or BA with Finance?
How do I know which school has good career guidance and helps their students to get to the career they want?

What are your grades and scores…

For econ, schools mentioned in these analyses may have some of the country’s stronger programs (available online): “US Economics Departments,” “US Economics Departments at Liberal Arts Colleges.”

I’d suggest UCLA for Applied Math or Stats if you can get in.

What are your grades and scores?
What can your family afford?

UCLA is at least as selective as NYU…and qualifies as a top tier school.

You can’t get into such sought after fields like investment banking without attending a top school. If you are interested in pursuing this field: look into the best possible undergrad business schools that are within your range of scores, attend one of these schools, get close to perfect grades and then apply to top schools for an MBA.

Alexandre I can tell you don’t much about NYU.

NYU IS NOT selective. It’s a glorified public school dressed up as a private one. The student body at NYU is as large as Michigan and Michigan has a MASSIVE student body count of over 40k+.

UCLA is substantially better school than NYU.

In terms of top schools for a finance career that are non-ivy NYU/Michigan/UVA/UNC/UCLA are your best bets. They are all top school and they have top 10-20, top bushiness schools and without a doubt better any top non-ivy privates (USC, Georgetown, Emory, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame etc) which have B-schools that rank below 20. I would recommend UCLA the least because it is so far from New York. CA is not a big banking town. Know your location.

I worked on wall street for many years at several banks and hedge funds. I saw more NYU grads than Columbia grads. Again that’s mostly because NYU is a glorified public school dressed up as a private one thats located in the center of Manhattan. I don’t think NYU is a prestigious school at all but going there will guarantee you a job. Stern is prestigious, its almost a school of its own with a different admission standard.
