nonexistant ECs...how much of a factor???

Asian Male
Massachusetts Public High School

UW GPA: 3.6
W GPA: 3.8
Class Rank: 8 out of 210

SAT I: 1300 (650/650)
SAT Math IC: 700
SAT Physics: 710

AP Physics: 4
AP Calculus AB
AP Statistics

ECs: Chess Club, Tutoring, Guitar
Worked past 2 summers

With nonexistant ECs, where should I reach? Is USC too far? BU was my “good match”, but is it a safety now? What other colleges should I look at?

Safety - UMass Amherst. Northeastern
Target - BU, BC, McGill, UNC Chapel Hill
Reach - USC

I applaud you for using common sense. Your list of schools I think is spot-on. No EC’s will make you a less-attractive candidate, but your academic credentials should remedy that in your good match schools

Best of Luck,
ZZ3

EC’s are one of the smaller factors. You’re list of schools is one of the most reasonable I have seen on boards. Go ahead and apply, I think you have a good shot :)

Perfect list for your credentials.

Is USC too much of a reach? What about UCLA? Are there any schools that are in between BU/BC and USC/UCLA? Thanks

No, you have a very good chance of getting into USC. You fit in their 50% tile area.

your 3.6 gpa is a 4.0 gpa on their scale (assuming your school’s max gpa is 4)

You SAT is acceptable, but on the low end for USC. For the class of 2008, the students attending had an SAT average score of 1360 or so. Being from MA will help. USC is eager to attract students from the east coast. My son is in his second year. We’re from Virginia. Make sure you go to any recruiting sessions they have in the Boston area. That’s important. Make contact with the regional rep. They could become your advoate. Visit the school and interview if you can. USC likes that.

ur schools match u very well except i think unc is very difficult for out of staters.

Your ECs are not “nonexistent.” I mean yeah, maybe you weren’t president of every club in your school, but how many people are? Tutoring and summer jobs are very good ECs.

Don’t do anything just because you think it’s what a college wants to see.
