Anybody can comment of “NonOwner Auto Ins” policy?

S is has never owned a car, is on our insurance policy but only as an occassional driver-never needed a car at school. He will be given a car by his employer and I am wondering if he needs insurance for personal liability and for uninsured motorists. This is something I would normally let him investigate but he is currently out of country and will return just before starting the job.

Generally, auto insurance follows the car not the driver. When our kids were young, we had a nanny who drove her own car (and carried only minimal liability insurance) to pick them up from school, take them to practices, etc. I asked our insurance company to add her to our auto liability policy, and they would not do so because she didn’t drive our car. Instead, we were able to get a non-owned auto liability policy to cover any accidents that she might have had.

Suggest that you ask your own insurance agent what should be done under these circumstances. They will probably suggest that your son verify the existence of liability insurance with his employer (in our state, proof of insurance must be carried in the car), in which case he should be all set.

He should talk to his employer. If it’s a company-owned car, the company should insure it. If the company expects him to carry the insurance, they should tell him.

A personal ‘non-owner liability’ policy allows the individual to set the liability and deductible limits which may be set low by the employer; and it will cover rental vehicles at much cheaper than rental company rates.
