norovirus? Ouch!

I’ve been sick since Monday night with GI issues. Some days it is less bad and then it just whomps me again. I’ll call my PA on Monday if it isn’t better, but I’m reading it is probably a form of gastroenteritis and I’ve been told in the distant past not to feed gastroenteritis with any kind of protein or fat. Yesterday I had just ginger ale, 4 saltines and a banana and I was still sick this morning. I’d love a little chicken broth and I am doing google research on this, but any anecdotal evidence? I had been traveling for 2 weeks before this hit and was on lots of planes and in very close contact with many people which suggests to me that it could be a norovirus. I am staying hydrated.

Sounds like the norovirus that seems to be speeding very quickly. So sorry to hear you were struck with it. Hope you are recovered very soon

My daughter and parents had this. It lasts around seven days, I am sorry to say. A very light diet is best. My mom was craving chicken broth so she ramen. Seemed like less fat than regular canned soup. Eventually my daughter started on some soups but it was at the end of the week. I hope you feel better soon. My husband heard me joke in September about a post on Pinterest about drinking Welch’s grape juice every day would prevent stomach viruses, we did and did not catch when she had it. We are very religious about drinking a glass a day. It has something to do about changing the ph of your stomach lining.

Think a nightly glass of a nice Cabernet would have the same effect?

Thanks for input. This does seem way longer than a “regular” stomach virus, which is why I was thinking norovirus. I’m trying to stay away from people.

murmur–white grape juice or purple? Does it matter?

3Trees–I’m always up for a nice Cabernet!

Has to be purple and yes wine will work as well, red only. Google it.

Bethievt, hope you feel better soon. When you do start incorporating chicken broth and eventually non fatty solids, make sure you start with small servings.

The norovirus hasn’t hit us too hard yet in this area so I’m starting my red wine defense today!

Here is a link, keep in mind this is Pinterest, the modern day version of our grandma’s words of wisdom. But right now that is all I have to hold on too - http://www.stopthestomachflu.com/Home/does-cranberry-juice-or-grape-juice-ward-off-the-stomach-flu

bethie, please take care of yourself!

I’ve been hit with this thing really badly, it lasted 4 days. The only thing I could eat was some miso soup and bread.

It is a really contagious virus, and this year we’ve got a new strain:

I think I got mine at the sushi restaurant where we ate lunch last week. Of course, Mr B “inherited” the virus from me!

I’ve heard it was coming. Not the thing I want to hear with an upcoming cruise.

D came down with it at school - it came on very suddenly. She went to the infirmary and was given IV fluids and a shot to stop the vomiting. She spent the night and they let her go back to the dorm the next day with saltines. She was neither the first nor the last at her school.

I’ve heard blackberries were a home ready for stomach bugs way back, so it must have the same ingredient as grape juice.

I’ve read that hand washing and not touching your face are all you can do to try to avoid it. I don’t imagine grape juice prevents the virus but maybe it settles the stomach.

Sorry you don’t feel well but be sure to stay hydrated.

On news they mentioned that norovirus is very hardy and that hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes are not enough to kill (unlike with flu). Recommended bleach based products for cleaning surfaces and thorough hand washing.

Thanks, everyone! Staying hydrated is basically the only thing I’ve managed since getting this thing. I’m staying away from everyone except my H. He could stay away from me if he wanted to. Lots of hand washing. I don’t have the focus to cook anything.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Thanks! Wouldn’t you think I’d lose some weight?

^Yes, what’s the point in being sick then. ;)

I mean really!

Has anyone else dealt with this issue on a plane because we have a trip or 2 coming up and I don’t know how to prepare for the sudden problems. Not like they let you get up whenever you want. I literally had no warning this morning and could barely make it to our unoccupied bathroom 10 feet away.

i hope this wasn’t TMI, but I’m really concerned about traveling now.
