We do too, but they were all engineering students (super competitive and NC State, and doesn’t really exist at UNC), and they were accepted later on. (two years ago)
I am so sorry. It is tough when the state flagships are so competitive. Virginia has a similar environment. My DD was deferred from UVA, her top choice. Fortunately, admitted to Virginia Tech, so she does at least have an in state option.

FYI - kid’s Wolfpaw Portal was updated today to show acceptance to University Honors Program. Might want to take a look for those who were waiting for it. No email or anything…just happened to be looking for something else and saw it. Kid was accepted in the first round of EAs in December.

There are lots of great lower cost schools, stats depending, still taking apps and they are fine schools. US News isn’t the determinant of a good school.
One making a choice above budget - it doesn’t have to be that way. That’s because people apply to those expensive schools.
But congrats on the admissions.
Yes. there are and we got into couple of them with scholarhip and into honors. Our preference is to the instate school. We will wait and see.

Im so sorry. It’s so tough. We were also deferred for NC State (OOS) and waitlisted for our in state school.
Just saw a video about NC State saying they have a ton of deferrals and LOTS of in state kids are taken in RD. Kids are deferred due to: test optional, grades that are rising and they want to see if continue, yield protection for high-achieving students (so submit the letter and show them you’re interested), STEM majors where tons apply (once again, send in that letter to demonstrate interest).
My advice, show them you really want NC State. Mine did so in her application (two years ago) and also got into Honors. She wrote about very specific NC State things in her essays.

Did they say in the video they are deferring to protect yield ? And if so, was this an NCSU video?
Can’t imagine any school would acknowledge that. And at a public, I doubt it’s true.

No, UNC does not because it is more prestigious, so there is no need for yield protection.
It was an admission coach video. No, a university would not say this. The person who discussed it is a a coach in the area (Wake Co) and has seen it happen for several admissions cycles. They defer a ton of in state kids in EA, then many are taken from the deferred group RD. This is especially true of very high stats kids who are from competitive counties who express continued interest. For many of those students, NC State is a backup/safety, and by deferring them, NC State can determine who is truly interested and willing to put the time in to express they want to go there. Deferral doesn’t mean denial and it’s not a waitlist, so people should not assume they won’t get in. This is what NC State says: What Does "Deferred for Final Review" Mean? | Undergraduate Admissions
