Really? On our tour they said engineering usually have a 4.0 and 35 ACT (in state) and oos it’s insanely difficult. No one should consider NC State a safety for engineering.
Not too long now!
Mine applied EA as well. 4.46/3.89 gpa, 33 ACT, applied for Exploratory Studies or sociology. Year-round athlete, qualified for regional/state meets, captain of sport, coach of sport in summer, NHS, 10 AP classes, all honors where possible
end of January right?
NCSU Early Action Results are scheduled for Jan. 30.
D24 received an email through her portal that the Wilson School at NC State will release its invite list for interviews for scholarships on January 30th. Interesting that it may be the same day as EA admission decisions.
Hi everyone, new to this thread. D24 is condiserig applying RD at this point for Physics. She has a 3.85 uw gpa, 1300 SAT, 7 APs and insane list of ecs and leadership roles. Does she have any shot? Weve been deferred from so many schools at this point, she is losing hope. This has been a rough go.
I would say yes, after being tuned into this thread and others, there does not seem to be any understandable logic to the acceptance decisions.
Being deferred just means they are still looking at her application, its not a denial or waitlist. She will probably get into some if not all of the schools.
Did she submit test scores? If so, that could be tricky. NC State’s STEM students usually have 34+ ACT scores and 1500+ SAT scores. If she hasn’t applied yet, apply test optional. What is her weighted GPA? Where has she been deferred from? Where has she been accepted? In state or out of state?
She has not applied yet, so we can go test optional if recommended. Her weighted gpa is a 4.1. She is OOS and has been accepted to UTK Tickle College of Engineering, but deferred by UGA, Clemson, Uof SC and by the way things are looking she will not get offered full admit to Texas A&M Engineering, most likely a pathway offer. We know that deferrals are not rejecitons, I think she is just nervous that the schools she thought were good fits are acepting high stat kids only. We worry that if all the RD deadlines pass she may only have one acceptance overall. I feel crazy saying that but this feels plausable this year!
What are some other schools she can apply to? Those all feel like hard target/reach schools if out of state and in STEM. There are thousands of colleges out there. Find some in state where she’ll be accepted and apply. Don’t submit a 1300 to NC State. It is VERY competitive out of state. Only 18% of students can be from out of state, so the admit rate is incredibly low, especially for STEM fields.
Va Tech by 1/15?
That’s an option she is considering, we toured it with her older sister. Great school!
Some suggestions for good Engg schools
- Iowa State: >90% acceptance rate, automatic scholarship for OOS students.
- Michigan State: >80% acceptance rate with automatic scholarship for OOS students.
- Arizona State: >90% acceptance rate with good chance of scholarship, rolling admissions.
These were the safety schools for Engg for my S24 with 3.5W / 1270 SAT stats
Tech would definitely be a reach if applying to Engineering. The scores they look for are insanely high. Plus by RD, its even more difficult to get in.
Thoughts on Colorado State?
Colorado State has a 91% acceptance rate and would also be a safety on that basis. S24 also has got into more selective schools, albeit through EA, such as USF, UCF, Binghamton and Stony Brook (all <45% acceptance rate with high avg GPA and SAT) for Engg. These were all reaches, so we were pleasantly surprised. Binghamton and Stony Brook even gave him decent scholarships. The Florida schools have low OOS tuition, making the COA almost on par with our in-state Rutgers and NJIT and so are terrific value propositions.
Good points about Va Tech. I have a business school bias because all my kids are going this route. Maybe U Delaware by 1/15. Didn’t realize it’s 62% OOS.
My middle kid is a junior OOS at U of SC and loves it. Would think that’s one that could come through in the end given the stats.
Have heard good things about the school and Fort Collins from people who should know (a college dean who used to live in CO and parents of students) but no direct experience.
Auburn by 2/1 would seem to fit with schools that have been applied too. Good luck!
Great info, really appreciate your insight!! This process is mind numbing! My husband has told our girls that undergrad engineering is great but that he wants them to get MBAs too! lol. I too think business is always a great path!
