Northeastern ($26K [global scholars]) or NYU ($11K [commute from home]) [engineering, no parent contribution]

Hi everyone! I’m really conflicted right now on which university to choose and don’t know what to do. I got into Northeastern for their Global Scholars program, where I would spend one semester in London and one semester in California. Northeastern would cost $26K with housing while NYU would cost only $11K because I would be commuting from home instead of dorming. I have an engineering major, and I’ve heard that Northeastern is better for engineering while NYU’s Tandon is relatively new. Northeastern’s Co-Op program is appealing, and I would like to have more of that typical “college experience” in Boston rather than commuting to NYU. I would need to take out loans for both colleges as my parents won’t be able to singificantly contribute. Please help and thank you in advance!!

You would do fine at Northeastern, probably come out with a couple of job offers from co-oops. Is it important enough to you to borrow an additional 60K more, so that you can live on campus at Northeastern? Will your parents co-sign loans for you?

How much total debt would you need for Northeastern?

It sounds like you will likely need more than the federal subsidized amounts. This suggests that you will need your parents to cosign loans for you. This leads to two obvious questions: Are they willing to do this? Are they financially qualified to borrow the money?

It is possible to get part way through your education and discover that it is not possible to borrow enough money to finish your degree. You do not want to put yourself in this situation.

NYU is a very good university, and it is ABET accredited for multiple types of engineering.

Seconding this. NYU Tandon is very well respected.

It was founded in 1854 and claims to be the second oldest private engineering school in the country. So whoever is telling you this is clearly misinformed.

$11k per year is about the outer limit of student self funding with federal direct loan and some student work earnings. $26k would require parent loans or cosigned loans.

So it looks like NYU is the only affordable choice.

New name, old school (with various names usually including the word Polytechnic). In the past, it was its own engineering focused school, and acquired NYU’s engineering division when NYU had financial troubles. More recently, NYU acquired Polytechnic as its engineering division. The name Tandon was added after a large donation.

How will you afford $11K or $26K?
