yes, I wasn’t able to put on my second semester classes this year because I am in dual enrollment but all of my course are accurate on common app which I believe they use instead of stars.
aaaaahhh that makes sense, I appreciate your thoughtful reply..that actually helps a LOT personally, as my 27 is considering northeastern and would come in with lots of credits and actually likes idea of NUin (not because it is easier admit but likes idea of study abroad and doing it earlier in some ways sounds easier than chopping up a program to them..)
thanks for this insight:) this is helpful to me:)
My D also likes the idea of studying abroad, but she doesn’t like the idea of spending a semester on GEs when Northeastern costs 90k! ![]()
But if you are getting financial aid, or if you are comparing multiple 90k options, or if you can make more use of the courses offered, I can see that it could be more attractive!
As someone who wishes my kid wanted to go to a LAC and study philosophy or something this bothers me not at all- I hate idea of kids going to college and taking 95% business classes or engineering. I don’t think it promoted good leaders or critical, well rounded thinking myself. We can agree to disagree on that though! I get the pragmatist approach to getting a job…
Also, won’t they have to take the GEs for most part anyway?
Yes, absolutely! Nothing wrong with GEs, but as a parent of a current engineering student, I think it’s much better to spread them out over all the years of college, instead of front loading all of them in the first couple of semesters. That way you aren’t stuck with semester after semester of nothing but engineering courses as an upperclassman (even if this might be fun for some students really focused on their major, it’s difficult to have 4 huge projects due at once). It’s also nice to have the option of taking a sequence of GEs over time so that you can reach upper division courses in an area of interest.
The GE choices at NUin locations are also necessarily more limited than at the main campus, and my D has lots of niche interests that she would like to spend her GE options on.
My son got accepted into the CS program in the Boston Campus and when we reviewed his financial aid offer, we saw that a large portion is institutional grant that is part of the Northeastern Promise. Based on what we read and assuming we understand correctly, the Northeastern Promise institutional grant is guaranteed for 4 years provided that my son meets all the GPA/enrollment requirements. Is this correct? It is just a bit too good to believe in…
That is correct. Northeastern Promise, along with the pre-read for ED, is the cheat code that a lot of people just don’t know about
The institutional grant will also increase by the same percentage as the annual tuition increase.
Merit scholarships will not increase though.
My daughter was accepted to the NU.in program and is seriously considering it. Hoping someone knows the answer to this question. In order for her to stay on track for 4yr graduation without additional courses looks like she will need to go to Greece. Luckily for us - she is very happy with that location. I know that is one of the biggest programs but it is first come first serve. Sooooo…. would it be ok if we put the first deposit down asap. But if she changes her mind to another school when March decisions come out - withdraw that decision and commit somewhere else? I know that we would lose deposit. (I would think stuff like this happens all the time as kids get off waitlists right?)
You are not bound to any school, if that’s what you’re asking.
People will de-commit even in summer as waitlist offers come in.
yes, you can do this- your deposit of basically securing your spot in the Greece cohort. as you already know, it’s nonrefundable.
Have the 2026 locations been announced? I don’t see them in the portal
No - just anticipating based off of prior year info (and the credits my daughter expects to come in with). Especially Greece being one of the biggest cohorts.
Yeah I think Greece is a pretty consistent location also because it has a lot of the STEM/Health science requirements available. I was sad to see Paris was gone last year- hopefully they’ll bring it back this year.
Thank you for confirming. I am not entirely sure I understand what you meant by “cheat code”… Can you please clarify?
Wow! That’s really great and really helps budgeting for the next few years. My son does have merit scholarship on the offer as well but it is only for one year. Will there be other scholarship opportunities after the first year that my son can apply?
Are you certain that the merit is not renewable?
I have not heard of new merit awards for later years.
Even if there are (departmental, etc.), you can never go into a situation expecting….at any school.
It does not say it is renewable or have any conditions/terms for renewal, so I will not assume it is renewable
