I recommend joining the parent Facebook group. Someone there said they think signup was in January last year.
I did for my son - he also applied EA. I hope it works out too!
Would you feel comfortable sharing how much merit? thanks
Last year I think the info came out within a week or so. It has to come out quickly because they offer 2 courses that can be take. Either spring term or summer term. Last year you could do both in spring/both in summmer or 1 in each. Just a max of 2. My daughter did her freshman writing class in the spring anda business class in the summer. But be mindful of what classes and terms are picked. Itâs a full college course, and the summer terms are condensed into 6-7 wks. Iâm glad she got the 8 credits but spring class was roughânot because of the class itself, but hard to motivate 2nd semester of senior year with regular classes PLUS a full college class.
I did
How do you enroll the honor program? Did you apply for it or NU just offered you directly?
It is offered by admissions. It usually goes to the top 10% of admits by college. You can also apply for it at the end of freshman year.
Iâm not sure about accepted students, but from my calculations using the common data set, it appears that 71% of enrolled Boston first years receive merit aid:
1192 seeking need who received non-need money (H2F)
598 non need seeking who received non-need money (H2N)
1192 + 598 = 1790 total receiving non-need money
2519 Freshman (H2A)
1790/2519 = ~71%
My D23 used RaiseMe and was formally offered the amount she âraisedâ from Northeastern.
As someone who lives in and works in Oakland, I concur - Oakland is a lovely place to live and the Mills campus is spectacularly beautiful. Also, for those who love the outdoors, the campus is a short uber or bus ride away from 4 major state parks (by car, itâs about 10 minutes to Sibley for hiking, mountain biking, etc.), about 15 minutes to College or Piedmont Ave with lots of shops and restaurants, and of course, San Francisco is just on the other side of the bridge (accessible by BART). And right now itâs about 62 degrees out, and it should stay that way for most of the âwinterâ.
What would be the benefit of applying at the end of freshman year?
hmmmâŠwhen my S23 was applying and admitted, NE was clear that merit does not stack on top of need-based aid. In our experience, the school was very generous with need. I am wondering how/why so many students who are getting need are also getting merit. Does it really change the amount they get or just the source?
If the student wanted to be in the honors program but was not offered it at admission. Honors has some perks.
I donât think it stacks, I think it just changes the source. Letâs say that Northeastern determines that your need is $40,000 and they offer you a $15,000 merit scholarship. You would receive $25,000 in need. And it would be reported on the H2 F line that shows students seeking need who received non-need money.
Thatâs what I thought.
Having lived and worked in Oakland myself, I agree. The Northeastern, formerly Mills, campus in Oakland is the most beautiful college campus I have ever visited. It is in a residential area, so for students looking to be on a truly urban campus, like Northeasternâs Boston campus, I can understand the skepticism. You have to take campus shuttle, public transportation, or drive to access many other great parts of Oakland and the Bay area overall. But for students willing to learn that, this opens up so much to do and see (arguably way more than the Boston metro area).
Agreed.
Is this your non-sports recruit child? Congrats!
I think this is correct. My understanding is merit comes from Admissions, then FA comes on top to what they determine your need to be.
This is the athlete. Twin applied EA.
