Northeastern Students?

What are the people like at Northeastern? What are the main groups of people on campus, and what states do people mostly come from?

Most people are from the New England states.

I’d stretch that out to say the whole northeast region-- sooooo many people from New York and New Jersey.

True, I often forget that NY and NJ aren’t New England.

hahaha, when I saw blink’s response, I KNEW that you had meant “northeast” because I do this all the time. I think we’re both a bit regionally biased :)

I get yelled at frequently for calling people from new york “new englanders”. Really seems to **** them off (which I enjoy immensely). Then I get the lecture about how NY/NJ are NOT new england, they are NOT the same, and the people ARE different. Blah blah blah. New England Northeast, Pish posh, potatoe potahtoh to me. They’re all just little states shoved up into the corner of the country, takes like max 8 hours to drive through them! That’s like one state in the west. They’re all the same to me!

If you followed any American Sports you wouldn’t be caught dead saying New England and NY/NJ are the same in those areas. .

In fact I do follow sports. I’ve also lived in Boston for long enough to know all about the NY/MA, NY/New England rivalries. It’s pretty ingrained in people who grew up in new eng-- sorry, the northeast. I get it, now that I live here. But I’d put some good money on the fact that most people on the other side of this country don’t really care which states are part of new england and which are part of the northeast but NOT new england, and use the phrase “new england” pretty loosely.

Mainly I still just do it for the reaction. Gets a good one every time.

well I’m from NY so expect that reaction every time :D

Haha. I would expect nothing less from a good new yorker!

(and don’t tell boston, but as an unbiased westerner, I prefer NY)
(and I always root against the patriots. but again, mostly for reaction.)

Sorry. Thread hijacked.

There were a surprising number of students at the Colorado “Accepted Students” even in Denver. So I think there is a sprinkling of kids from other states and countries - my son has a suitemate I think from Pakistan.

colorado_mom: Did you like that reception? I thought it was really badly organized and the information wasn’t presented in a way that got me excited about the school at all. It gave me a few doubts about wanting to go to NU…

There is definitely a population from the west. I had a roommate from CO once (and he knew several coloradans around NEU), have a group of friends from Seattle, lab partner from Arizona, etc. And lots of californians.

You definitely won’t be alone, just in the minority! And if you’re from the west like me, I have to warn you, you will not find good mexican here. They are liars. Don’t believe anything anyone tells you. Don’t let them take you to Border Cafe, or Fajitas and Ritas, or anywhere. Just don’t even try, you will only be disappointed. You’ll have to get your fix from Qdoba or Chipotle, sorry.

I’ve noticed the distinct lack of good Mexican as well… its pretty saddening.

A couple good Thai places though… definitely helps to make up for it.

I agree with you, Emily, about the fact that it really doesn’t matter to anyone but northeastern people… I grew up in NY, moved to Florida, and now go here. I am constantly annoyed by the fact that most people here think an hour drive is called a road trip. I once tried to convince someone to drive me from Salem, NH to the water… and got a lecture on how if we were going to drive that far, we should get a hotel.

Boston is also lacking on Greek food… but they make up for it with abundance of Indian food.

winniemazing - We liked the NEU reception in Denver (April 2010). But my son had already visited the campus 4 times (once with older sister)… so we knew a lot about NEU already.

The food was far better than the chips and pretzels that we expected.

We in Maine are not quite sure if Connecticut is REALLY part of New England… haha but I GUESS we are all Northeast! :)
