Northeastern University 2019 EA

my son was deferred.
surprised & not surprised.
SAT 1520, 760 & 760
NMSF
12 APS, 6 college level, anything else honors
GPA 95 uw, 103 w
top 10%, but not ranked
applied FA
computer science

didn’t get to visit the school & not sure how much this is looked at.
Also if he becomes a NMF, which we should know by mid feb will this help?

@BrooklynRye Did you get the financial aid package that you were looking for? I remember that was your first choice school. Good luck!

@am9799 - Thank you for remembering! The jury is still out. The Dean’s Scholarship was a bit underwhelming, but it’s a start. The real test will be need-based aid. With 3 kids in college and 1 in grad school in 2019-2020, I think we put forth a good case for some substantial need based aid. Spoke with FA this morning. They were very pleasant. They missed a couple of documents in our package (as in someone omitted them from the upload from IDOC), but said they will get back to us probably next week. Fingers crossed!

@HERONotMuch NMSF scholarship does not stack with other merit or FA so I would not expect more. Was the $56k all merit or did that include NU grant as well or other FA? Congrats on your acceptance and wonderful scholarship!

Accepted to NU in program (study abroad 1st semester, then go to NU campus for spring and on)
ACT: 31
GPA: 4.23 W/3.92 UW
Michigan
Undeclared
White/Female
Applied for FA
dual enrolled at university of michigan-flint
4 APs (got 3’s on both from junior year, will test on other 2 in spring)

I was honestly shocked to have gotten in (even though it’s the in program), I applied last minute the day that EA applications were due. My essay wasn’t over any of the given topics (kind of wrote about random stuff), and I thought it was mediocre at best. I retook the ACT after I was accepted and got a 33, so I kind of wish I had waited and applied regular decision but oh well. For extracurriculars, I did student government freshman year, am a NHS member, play lacrosse (captain), piano, ski, church youth group leadership team, and used to swim until I was injured. The biggest thing I’ve been involved in though was working at a teen summer camp on catamarans in the Caribbean for scuba diving, sailing, and marine science. I became a NAUI Divemaster and was certified for other specialties/sailing certifications. This was something I was involved with every summer for the last 4 years and for 3-9 weeks each summer, and I definitely think it helped my admission. Also, I went on an official visit my junior year and believe that helped. I really didn’t think I’d get in though considering my GPA (all A’s fresh/soph year, then junior year had a few B’s/B-'s).

deferred from MA

@BrooklynRye Speaking from experience, Northeastern wasn’t one to understand specific needs. I understand that each situation is different, but I will share my experience. I was admitted ED 1 this year, and our documents were submitted, but I couldn’t submit my deposit without knowing the financial aid package. When it finally did come, they’d expected us to pay ~50K. This was a problem because 2019-2020, my family will have three enrolled in college. And the amount they wanted us to pay was more than my two siblings combined. After speaking with the financial aid office, they increased the aid but only to ~40K. I eventually had to be released from my ED agreement and I won’t be going there next year, sadly.

Basically, Northeastern has a different way of calculating need, and they cover 100% of the need they see. Just wanted to share my experience for anyone else.

@Aasabem - Thank you so much for sharing the benefits of your experience. I am very sorry you are not able to attend your clear first choice. A loss for them, I am sure. I will report back to this thread on my experiences.

@tbrixton I am on the list to be called back as well. Let me know if you have any success and I will do the same.

@HERONotMuch @kdmt1998 when I opened my “Decision Letter” in the portal, the first lines of the letter read

“Congratulations and welcome to Northeastern University! We are pleased to offer you admission to the 122nd entering class and to the University Honors Program with a major in Business Administration in the D’Amore-McKim School of Business.”

I’m not sure how they pick people for the program, but congrats to you / your daughter on your acceptances!!

Decision: Accepted
SAT/ACT: 1340
GPA: 4.0 uw
State/Country: New York City
Major: Computer Science
Did you apply for FA?: Yes, received 23k

Can’t wait to see all of you if I attend!

Is there a place online or with social media for admitted students to connect? Being in the middle of Tennessee there are not many people around us even remotely interested in Northeastern.

@jhugge Facebook look up class of 2023.

This is kind of a slap in the face to those who got deferred or declined. Be carful to not say " I got accepted and I’m extremely disappointed’ in the same posting.

ditto

Does anyone know if Northeastern requires mid year reports if you were accepted EA? Thanks!

Daughter was deferred from NC. with a 33 ACT (34 superscore if they do it) IB diploma program candidate (all A’s in school), top 6% of class, extracurriculars include mock trial, YAG, lots of volunteer work, honor societies, beta club, art club, etc. I have to say I am surprised to see so many smart and talented students deferred (I thought for sure she’d get in! Who knew!) Congrats to those who were accepted.

Hello, I was looking through the NEU terms of admission and as far as I can tell they only require a final transcript and you can’t get lower than a C in any class, congrats on getting in!

@jhugge in a few days you’ll receive a link to an Admitted Students page run by both Facebook and Northeastern. It’s a separate website
