I stumbled upon this forum earlier this week and I am very grateful for all of the posts. It definitely helps both parents and students. My daughter felt much better after seeing others be deferred and those accepted. We also did not know NEU was not need blind and kind of makes me sad she would possibly be deferred because of perceived inability to pay.
Can someone point me to stats on deferred students being accepted RD? I am sure this has been asked but there are 86 pages and I am hoping the answer is pinned somewhere?
Unfortunately that stat is not released anywhere. I’m trying to do an informal survey this cycle to see if we can get it for future years, but it’s anyone’s guess.
If I had to guess a number, I would say 25%-33% would be fair but it really could be anything, this is only based on watching admissions cycles on CC, an already biased sample set. Northeastern seems to use deferrals in many ways: to manage yield by seeing EA commits/withdrawals before the RD round, to check interest of statistically overqualified applicants, and then of course for applicants on the fence generally. Of course all of this is just speculation from the outside.
Short version: A deferral is not a “soft rejection” like it is for some schools but don’t get your hopes super high either.
Decision: Accepted to NU.in program
SAT: 1370
GPA: 4.5 weighted
State/Country: PA
Major: Journalism and English
Ethnicity: White, Filipino, Samoan
Did you apply for FA?: Yes, but did not get any info as we still owe them a tax return and W-2’s
DD is not attending - she specifically said that she was not interested in this program when she applied so not sure why it was offered to her, plus with her lower stats I doubt she would get decent financial aid.
Decision: Accepted to NU.in program
ACT: 35
GPA: 3.8 unweighted
State/Country: CA
Major: business
Deferred students can get in with scholarship – in 2017, his older brother was deferred EA, but later accepted with Dean’s Scholarship of $22K annually.
@Collegeprocessfun Sorry to hear but those numbers are similar to my daughter who was accepted (from MA), so should be in good shape (of course not just about numbers). This may be a conspiracy theory but on this thread I have seen an inordinate number of people from CT deferred or denied. Likely just an odd coincidence.
Pretty much everybody at my high school that applied to northeastern (including myself) got deferred which is surprising as most of us are in the green on Naviance. But I hope that a lot of deferred applicants get accepted RD!
ACT: 33

State: MD

Essay: I think it’s decent, not necessarily the best

@Collegeprocessfun and @tbrixton - My daughter was also deferred from CT. While it is not a rejection it is still disappointing. We had thought based on her academics and based on her HS Naviance stats that Northeastern would be a match school for her. Still hoping for an acceptance in March but worried about any available merit aid.
Here is her information for @PengsPhils stats:

Hey y’all. I applied EA for Fall 2019 and I just got accepted last night with a Deans Scholarship worth $56,000 and hopefully the National Merit Scholarship as well, which I will find out later in February. I applied to the major of Mathematics and Business. It does not mention the honors college so I don’t think I was accepted, but I’m not super sure, because I thought the Deans scholarship was only offered to those who qualified for the honors college?? Can someone who DID get into honors show me what it looks like/ how they know, just to confirm for me my status. Cuz I’m definitely interested in this school, and that would help me make my final decision over colleges. thanks.
and uh, if you want my grades just for the heck of it

Hi, I’m curious as to how the rejection letter is like. For acceptances, it’s the screen saying “the wait is over… you’re in”. Is it the same for rejections and deferrals?
hey that’s awesome! I know this is going to sound really weird, but I got accepted into business as well with the Deans scholarship, but I didn’t make honors and I was wondering what that looked like on your acceptance letter. What did it say? (also congrats! do you think you’ll be going to NEU?)
@tbrixton I’m not sure if you saw my post but the same thing happened to my daughter for NHRP. We thought $30k was a lock as well. We sent an email. If you talk to anyone in fin aid can you let me know what they say?
I am wondering the same thing how you know if you are in honors. My DD got the $22K Dean’s scholarship but no mention of honors. She was accepted into a bunch of other colleges in the honors program but not Northeastern (I don’t think since it did not say anything in her acceptance?) Wonder if you can call and ask to be re-evaluted for honors since she has offers from other schools? Unless, one is in from getting the Dean’s scholarship but wouldn’t it say so?
@oreomollykona & @tbrixton - The 4-year guarantee is for the floor of need-based financial aid established by a freshman year grant of aid. This number will not go lower, but can be raised should financial circumstances change for the worse. Merit aid, i.e. scholarships, are not guaranteed. The standards for maintaining one’s scholarship are pretty straightforward and not particularly arduous, e.g., a 3.0 GPA. They are attached to your scholarship letter in your admissions letter.
