Northwestern Econ 381

Is it a good idea to take econ 381 (econometrics) without taking econ 281 (intro to econometrics)?

I have a fairly strong math background as I have already completed multivariable calc, linear algebra, and intro to stats.

My roommate last year was an econ major, and according to him 381 was one of the hardest classes he’s taken yet (and that’s after taking 281 and a number of other econ classes).

Maybe you could handle it, but why chance it? More than likely 381 draws on concepts heavily covered in 281; skipping it would pile additional catch-up work onto an already difficult class.

Yeah you’re fine. It’s harder but it’s self contained

What kind of math background should you have before taking econ 381 directly?

Instead of asking people here, you could send an email off to someone in the econ department.
