Northwestern HPME Part 1

theres a pretty detailed thread on it somewhere under sat subject tests…

and to clear up its not just class of 2010…its everyone after class of 2009

@allstar & zzzboy:

The Bacc/MD who took us around before the interview day told us her sister (who, according to her, took the process much more seriously) applied to Bacc/MD (her first choice), made it to the interview and was rejected–she ended up at the Drexel program instead. So, I wouldn’t rely on any “advantage,” big or small, one could gain from that.

@pagar:

You can send in your ACT with Writing instead of your SAT, but you have to send in the Math Level 2 and Chemistry SAT II scores, no exceptions.

Dabulls! So you are saying that even if you took the SAT in 2008 and another SAT in 2010, can you decide to send the SAT taken in 2008?

here ya go

[SAT will let students pick which scores to show colleges - Los Angeles Times](Multiple choice for SAT takers)

I am going into my senior year and plan on applying to NUs HPME program.

800 SAT II Math Lvl II
730 US History

AP Statistics (Sophomore year)- 5
AP Environmental Sci (Soph yr)- 5
AP US History (Junior year)- Most likely a 5
AP English Language (Jn yr)-Most likely a 5 at the very leasy a 4
I am taking the following this year:
AP Chem
AP Bio
AP Span
AP Econ (Macro)
AP Econ (Micro)
AP Calc BC
AP English Literature and Comp

GPA-3.975 (1 B, 92 first semester of freshmen year english)
Rank 4/568
Have volunteered 200 Hours at the Info Desk at the local hospital
Teacher’s Assistant to an Honors Chemistry teacher
Member of the recycling club freshmen and sophomore year
Member of the We Help Others club junior year
Vice President of the National Honors Society
Member of the Spanish National Honors Society
Varsity Level competitor of the schools math team junior year and probably next year as well

…I was just wondering what my chances of getting in are like

It’s hard to say without seeing your SAT I/ACT score. In case you don’t know, your chance is zero without SAT II chemistry.

If your SAT 2 Chem score and your SAT score are anything like your GPA, then academically you can make the cut for HPME…but, I don’t think you have anything particularly special about your ECs, and you can’t get into HPME solely based on grades. So if you can find any extra ECs to add (medically related- researching, shadowing, etc.) before application time, that would be great!

I plan on taking the SAT II Chem during October after reviewing it this summer…
…given that I’m going to be enrolled in AP Chem next year should I take it in the October or December?

and my ACT score was only a 32 (and 12 on writing)…I’ve taken it twice and the first time my break down was 32-33-33-29 and the second 35-34-29-31, Eng-Math-Rea-Sci respectively. I’m going to take it once more I think I’ll get a 33 but given a range around 32 what would be my chances.

Also the Teacher’s Assistant job demands that I set up/create labs, conduct experiments, handle chemicals, etc 3 days a week throughout the school year. I also volunteer at the hospital along with the local library.

you need more cowbell to get in

please please please start a new thread?

-jon

wow nostalgia…i remember when i was first applying for hpme and i found this forum…anyways congrats to all those who got in this year, look forward to seeing you all. and to those who are choosing, definitely a lot of special great things about the northwestern program that you wont want to miss out on, so definitely consider.

oh and if you guys have any questions that jon isnt able to take care of then feel free to ask.

If you are admitted to the HPME program, is it restrictive and mandatory for you to attend the program at Northwestern or can you choose other programs at other colleges?

roughly how many people get in?

“If you are admitted to the HPME program, is it restrictive and mandatory for you to attend the program at Northwestern or can you choose other programs at other colleges?”

Please help me out, I am also applying to Wayne State University’s MedStart program and also Michigan State Universitiy’s BS/MD program. And a couple of others which i will list at anyone’s request.

hii, Im a juniour who’s obsessively number one top choice is hpme, and I have a question about high school course selection.
Im doing the IB diploma program, and have room in my schedule for 1 standard level elective juniour and seniour year each. I know for sure one year I’ll be taking IB chemistry, but Im having a hard time deciding between IB physics and IB art for the other year.
Ive been taking art classes in school since elementary school, and am fairly decent. however, if physics would help my chances of getting into hpme, then Id rather take that. plus Id have some background for college physics so I wouldnt flunk the class.
what do you guys think, would admissions appreciate something different[art], or would they put more faith in me if I had more science[physics]?

and animefreakss4, I tutor at kumon too! hahaha

animefreakss4: you need to take SAT II Chemistry (it’s required for the application…)

vekkzzz: It can go either way. I would say Physics is the safe route but Art definitely makes you appear well rounded (which is a definite plus for the HPME program [the whole point of the program is to give students the chance to explore interests outside of the sciences]) <– nested statements ^.^
