I think it really depends on what that B is. I don’t really think it’s a huge obstacle if it is in history when you are simultaneously taking nine other classes… Of course, I wouldn’t assume anything.

sohni - i really don’t think you can jump to that conclusion ; we really have no idea how they are doing this. so yeah, like tofu said, no one’s down and out until mid-feb, at the very least.

yea if you check some of the earlier pages of this thread from last year, you’ll see that ppl were notified around Feb. 10th as well…so those of us who haven’t gotten notified, we have 2-3 more weeks to live…MUHAHAHAHAHA

B’s shouldn’t hurt too much, i hope…i’ve got like 3…but as long yer top 10 percent you should be fine

yeah, one B shouldn’t determine everything. especially for a program as selective as this, they’re looking for things way beyond grade, like your dedication to pursuing medicine etc. i wouldn’t be worried about your grade:) plus you have all those As to balance it out!

“so those of us who haven’t gotten notified, we have 2-3 more weeks to live…MUHAHAHAHAHA”

lol, 2 weeks it is then

its pretty crazy…starting on monday, its probably gonna be the week where the majority of us will get our interview notifications…time flies, i’ll tell ya that

hey everyone, I am currently a first year HPME and can give you guys some advice. Regarding the worried posts about interview notifications–HPME does not notifiy everyone at once, so you guys definitely should not worry if someone else received the letter and you didn’t. I don’t even think its based on geographical location, although don’t quote me on this.

For those of you who already received the interview notice, congrats! Only a small percentage of applicants are invited back for an interview. Just make sure you have a well-defined answer for the big question: why do you want to be a doctor. Be sincere about it, to your interviewer and to yourself. They might also ask you something along the lines of why would you want to go to a combined program rather than regular undergrad–med school. Make sure you have a good answer for that too. And of course, look sharp. They want confident, good natured, and dynamic individuals. This is the time to show off your maturity and demonstrate that you are not just like any other high school student; you are a high school student who has a very focused idea of your future for the right reasons.

I would also highly recommend staying overnight as a prospie on campus. It will be a good experience; you will be roomed with hpmes (like me!) who can give you advice and a good sampling of life at Northwestern. One of the things that you should keep in mind (many applicants of BA/MD programs tend to overlook this) is that your undergraduate years are some of the BEST years of your life. I would say being in hpme makes your experience even better. Make sure you like Northwestern as well as the HPME program, because it will be your home. Most students already call their dorms “home.” Northwestern is an amazing school in itself and the people are amazing. Get as much as you can out of your stay here.

I hope this post offered at least some help to some of you. I remember it was a stressful time this time of year last year. Hopefully I will get to see some of you next yr! (or earlier if I happen to host you during your interview)

pipinghottofu is the real McSteamy…

thank you jcr for the post:) i haven’t been notified for an interview yet, but i definitely look forward to one. regarding your experience, what are some things you guys do differently in hpme vs regular undergrad pre-med? are there exclusive privileges (besides going into med school early?) also, what do you like the most about Northwestern right now:)?

jcr - thx 4 the post! that was sooo helpful…
i’ve heard that hpme kids are WAY more relaxed than those trying to get into med school the normal way. do you agree?
also, what do you think of the quarter system @ NorthwesterN?

jcr, do you know if acceptance letters for hpme candidates are mailed out on a rolling basis after interview?

i second whatever jcr and meadle said to jcr…and dnajazz, you gotta stop man, I know i’m sexy, but back off, okay?

we don’t take different classes than regular undergrads, if that’s what you mean. We do have quarterly dinners, where you get to meet upperclass-hpmes, the hpme administration, med students, and other med school people. There is usually some sort of presentation. Also, hpme offers you alot of support in terms of finding internships, research experiences, etc. We do get sophomore standing starting winter quarter and that is a benefit in many ways–an early registration time (which is actually very helpful), preference when selecting for dorms sophomore year, ability to get into certain classes, etc.

What do I like most about Northwestern–Basically just the whole experience, with the added security of already being accepted into med school. It’s a pretty amazing feeling knowing that you have one route (an incredibly amazing one) already laid out for you, while you can spend your undergrad years doing whatever you want. The people at northwestern are amazing too, both students and faculty. I actually like the quarter system; its tough because everything is sped up, but we get to take many more classes.

I don’t think hpmes are WAY more relaxed than regular pre meds, simply because many hpmes are type A students who are intrinsically motivated to do well…there are many hpmes who study hardcore and come out with 3.8s-4.0s. However, there is certainly less pressure, and you can do things without worrying about building up your resume. That is an incredible opportunity.

And finally…no, acceptance letters are mailed at the same time. Good luck!

AHH! So I got my interview letter today too, and I’m amazingly thrilled about it. I’m from California by the way, so I’m looking forward to the cold & snow of Evanston right now. hahah.

Has anyone already scheduled their interview yet? If so, what date did they give you? (e.g. late March, etc.)

congratulations february rain!!!

that’s awesome…

hey february_rain and anyone else that might know about this:
Do they let you pick your own date for interviewing?

I’m asking because I might be in the area of Northwestern during the last week of March, and being able to schedule it for that time would be awesome (of course, that’s IF I get offered an interview, which is definitely a big if).

Do you think if you scored in the 600’s for the SAT II’s one can just forget about getting into HPME??? It seems as though everyone is talking 700 and above. The application is in but the SAT II’s didn’t come out until later. They have the scores but it seems like there is no chance. Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thank you so much.

i got a 690 in sat II chem, so i was wonderin’ bout this too

billybobbyk: They originally wanted to give me February 7th, which would have been next Wednesday, but I asked for a later date so that I could more easily book a flight. Hence, my interview’s going to be on February 13th at 10:30 am. It seemed like they were pretty eager to have me book it on a date in early February, so I’m assuming they won’t let you do it in late March.
