AmritaRani, maybe you saw this and got 30 from here

“Each year Northwestern University admits approximately 30 highly talented students to the Honors Program in Medical Education (HPME), a seven or eight year program leading to an undergraduate degree and to the MD.”

Hi everyone, I’m also in the predicament of having to decide between HPME and other schools. Just wondering if those that are choosing between ivies and HPME could please pm me with thoughts or whatnot, I need to talk to someone (my parents know nothing about the college/med school process). Anyways, my AIM sn is CL9589 if anyone wants to talk.

Thanks!
Conflicted

stantheman836, i think the program itself is filled but you can still go to the session itself without really signing up, i talked to the lady on the phone, either that or you can email her and see, it depends on how far you live, in my case its about a 45 min drive so i can just drive there for day 2

three6mafia,
thanks i think that was what i read

acemaster33, thanks, i will be there on the 23/24
btw, where do u live? im askin cause i live about 30 minute drive from NU
im in deerfield (suburb north of chicago)

i lied, i’m going to MSU

AmritaRani, good luck with MSU. I think we probably had similar situations (money drew me away from HPME).

AmritaRani, Why did you choose MSU over HPME??

Hey guys, i also got into HPME , but i just found this site. I have a question for all of you. I also got into BU’s 7 year med program on the Trustee Scholarship which is full tuition for all of undergrad and I am having a hard time deciding where to go. My family is middle class and i cannot not consider the financial situation. If any of you can give me some advice or shed some light on my situation, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I was in that kind of dilemma; I got a full ride at Rutgers-NJMS and basic admissions into HPME.
In th end, I chose Rutgers-NJMS. Some people here on CC will tell you that you must be crazy to give up HPME as it’s so hard to get into, etc. Those people are idiots, simply put. They go crazy over prestige and are not down to earth. Realistically, coming out of medical school with a ~300 k debt is no joke. Doctors, on an average, don’t earn a huge amount of money as some dream.
If the ends justify the means, a good residency is all that matters. But go to Northwestern if you like the place and will be happy with your decision. Give us the pros and cons, from your viewpoint. In the end, prestige means very little and those who think otherwise have an overly inflated ego.

MedSchool4Me~~~ the reason i chose MSU is basically financial. undergrad is free for me at MSU but not at northwestern. Also, med school tuition is a lot more at Northwestern than at MSU (because i live in Michigan).
but another important factor for me was that i didn’t really care about getting a medical degree from a “better” school. I’m not interested in going into academics or doing research or anything like that, i just want to practice. Part of it also had to do with my priorities- career is high on my list but it isn’t the very top priority i have in life.
And i definitely agree with Hydrogen3k- debt is a big deal and it’s not something that i want to have hanging over me for such a long time. i’m not the kind of person who can still LIVE like that. and i also agree that prestige means very little. really, it’s true.

actually, i had DECIDED to go to HPME and then a couple days later i was on a plane coming back from somewhere and i was thinking about how much i wanted to go to MSU, etc etc, and about the money situation, and basically everything i posted right above this.
so what i’m trying to say is, even after you decide, make sure you think about it a little more. after i decided on HPME i was miserable, and now that i know i’m going to MSU i feel great!!!

It’s just that there basically is no difference in medical school between Boston University and Northwestern ( in terms of residency match lists and also how many people applied and how many got in ), so if i went to Northwestern it would be just for the undergrad, which is better overall, but Boston’s is free. I dont know it’s still a hard decision

lcheeq, if you feel that northwestern’s and boston university’s medical schools are better, it depends on the financial aid you got from both schools. I would look at undergrad experience vs financial aid for Nw and BU.

EDIT - wow just read your previous post.

You got into BU’s undergrad with a full tuition scholarship, no money from northwestern, and you feel that NW’s and BU’s medical schools are equal to each other. I would take that much of a difference in money over a difference in ‘undergraduate experience’. If I was in your situation (which trust me, I wish I was), I’d take BU’s program. full tuition undergrad at NW is expensive; having all of UG paid for (tuition wise at the very least) is excellent, especially at a school like BU.

there is a Northwestern HPME class of 2014 group on facebook
people who are going to hpme need to join

I know that HPME does not require the MCAT.

But where does it actually say on the Northwestern website that the HPME program does not require the MCAT? Can someone provide me a link? I can’t seem to find it.

Hey everyone, I’ve given it a lot of thought, and I’m almost positive that I’m going to go to Princeton over HPME. I still have to visit Princeton this Tuesday or Wednesday, but I feel pretty confident about my choice. Again, if anyone wants to talk about HPME vs. another option, my AIM sn is CL9589.

Thanks for all the help guys, and I wish everyone the best of luck where ever you decide to go!

Conflicted, my son has also decided on Princeton over HPME. He was even more assured he is making the right choice after visiting Princeton on the Admit student weekend. I will pass on your AIM and maybe you can chat - most likely you will be classmates at Princeton!

I think you guys are really going to regret it during the long med application process but hopefully it will work out for you guys. Good Luck at Princeton! :)

Thanks smathur! I really do hope to meet more people who choose to turn down HPME, because I’m still not 100% certain of my decision. Eternity–I may regret it during the process, but:

a) I believe that the process will help me to grow in the long run in the same way that this undergrad application process has helped me grow. Going through the apps and interview process, I have gained a large amount of insight into myself, and how I operate the best.
b) Although I may regret it during the process, it is a short duration of regret, whereas if I go to HPME, I know I will probably be regretting my decision almost every moment, questioning myself and asking myself if I could have done better by going to Princeton.

Anyways, just some thoughts. But as always, I wish everyone the best–whether or not you choose HPME, I wish no regrets upon anyone, and I hope everyone enjoys their university years to the fullest.
