Northwestern HPME Part 1

Icheeq- i would definitely take BU over HPME, ESPECIALLY since you think their med schools are equal (which i think they basically are). when i went for my interview for the BU program i loved the kids and how close they were, etc. etc. i think you’ll be happy there even though the undergraduate experience is SUPPOSEDLY not as good at northwestern.

AmritaRani,
Thanks for your reply. I was looking at the match list for BU and Northwestern, can anyone give me some advice on which one is better, or are they both the same?

Medical Schools in bold are ones that have garunteed programs. HPME is the best!

you forgot UCSD’s Medical Scholars Program.

you also forgot Upitt, U Rochester, Case Western, Wash U St Louis, and Univ of Alabama Birmingham’s programs.

wash u isn’t really a guarunteed program since you basically have to everything a regular premed has to do, it just increases your chances of getting in
and i was just going off the programs that people have mentioned on this thread

Can someone please answer this question: Are only gods accepted to this program?! These people need out of this world and beyond standardized test scores, all kinds of impressive EC activities, and A HELL OF A LOT of cash. It is unfair for any parent to subjugate their children to this kind of pressure. I’m sure more then 90 per cent of applicants are super intelligent good people with all kinds of dreams and aspirations.

I got into the program, and I’m not a god in any sense of the word. What’s most important is to demonstrate that you really want to pursue a career in medicine and that you are mature enough to make this decision and to succeed in college.

There are people that I know who have much better stats than I do who were not accepted into the program. What it really comes down to is the interviews and how well you can convey your desire to study medicine.

i totally agree…stats maybe might get your foot in the door, but once you get to the interview stage, that’s all there is.
if you’re passionate about medicine, they’ll recognize it. they look for people who can communicate and are motivated, etc. It isn’t just about what you look like on paper, and it can’t be in this kind of a profession.

So many of us here have failed at so many things - i know i have. If you keep in mind what’s really important, and the fact that getting into one of these programs does not make or break your life, much less your medical career, there’s no way the pressure will get to you:) and as for cash - i’m going to the place that’s offering me the most money. and i’m still going to be steeped in med school debt at the age of 75.

meadle, there is no way you are going to be in debt for med school until 75
once you start getting a steady income as a doctor, then you will be able to easily pay off those debts

ok yeah, i was exaggerating a little bit. but the point still holds (maybe 45? i’ve seen it happen…)! :P

hi. this is my first time posting but i’ve been following this thread for a little while. so to start off, congratulations to everyone on their acceptances and good luck with college decisions…
anyway, i was wondering if anyone could share their wisdom:
how much emphasis does HPME put on the ACT writing score?
i scored decently otherwise but am currently debating whether or not
to retake in june…

Standarized test scores aren’t everything, even for Medical programs like HPME. They can help open doors, but ultimately your foot will only get in if they can see that you are truly dedicated to becoming a doctor and are passionate about medicine. A 33+ on the writing score could help, but ultimately it will not make a difference on whether you get accepted of not. I think HPME puts more weight on the SAT2 subject tests rather than the SAT or ACT because they can determine if you are capable in advanced math and chem. The advantage for taking the ACT is that you can cancel the score if you scored lower, so I would retake. But a 36 ACT writing score will mean nothing if your essay isn’t any good.

i agree :P

hey guys, i’m an HPME-er who is going to start in the fall. if you’re on facebook, we have a group called Northwestern HPME Feinberg '14 so you should definitely join because we want to meet everyone!
:)

Hey, AmritaRani, you decided on HPME?? Last I heard, you were going to MSU. What changed your mind?

I thought you were going to MSU AmritaRani

yeah me too?

lol

Hey guys, I have decided to got to BU’s accelerated medical program instead of HPME on the full scholarship. I hope you all the best in your future endeavors!

haha i knowww i’m an indecisive piece of poop
what changed my mind was that my parents convinced me that they really can afford for me to go to northwestern
and also i wanted to go to MSU because of my friends…which is a bad reason to make a decision…
so i feel enlightened. rejoice.
