Northwestern U journalism dean's use of unamed sources

This has been quite a drama:
[16 instructors voice concerns about NU journalism dean’s use of unnamed sources – chicagotribune.com](http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-medill_webfeb20,0,190953.story)

Thoughts on arguments of both sides?

The original student column:

There have been problems within the journalism and communications programs for a few years. Nothing like an academics’ power struggle.

A lot of Medill alums have been concerned with the changing emphasis and direction under this guy.

Anyway, I am not aware of anything like this going on with the communication programs though. Or do you mean “communications” as in journalism? At NU, the communication programs (theater, film, communication studies…etc) are in the school of comm, not journalism.

Probably just journalism. The COHE had an article about it and quoted the head of the Comm school at UW which houses both comm and journalism. It dealt with teaching theory versus teaching the practice of journalism.

I am not sure where this would go. Looks like many people would hope to use this to kick him out. Anyway, the following describes what’s been bothering many students and alums.

Is he a friend of Obama? What is it about Chicago and “unnamed sources”?
