These three schools are at the top of my list and I was looking for some kind of comparison between the three of them in terms of admissions, academics and social/night life. This three schools are all in suburban environments right outside major cities which is what im dieing for and Im just trying to get a good idea of the major differences of these schools. Thanks

Well, what do you want to study?

Georgetown
Northwestern
Emory

I’d go with Emory unless you want to study international relations (then Georgetown) or journalism (Northwestern). The weather is completely different at all three schools, but I think the student body is similar. Northwestern probably has the most school spirit, then Georgetown, and then Emory if that matters to you. Emory is in Atlanta which is a great city, not stereotypical southern at all.

chicago > dc > atlanta ;)

Emory is kind of liberal, Georgetown is kind of socially conservative.

Prestige I’d say:
Northwestern
Georgetown
Emory

Socially: They are all decent; not great

Student Body –
Northwestern: Mixed Bag
Georgetown: Also Mixed; But more preppy than Northwestern
Emory: Jappy

I’d say Georgetown has the most attractive student body of the three.

They are all different, but in my opinion…
Prestige wise:
Georgetown
Northwestern
Emory

Difficulty to get in wise:
Georgetown
Northwestern
Emory

Social life wise:
Emory
Georgetown
Northwestern

AND, athletics wise:
Northwestern
Georgetown
Emory

Hope this helps.

ah never mind…

Georgetown has better prestige in political circle but in academic circle, Northwestern is more prestigious than Georgetown. In terms of admission, Georgetown has lower admission rate but Northwestern students have higher average test scores.

thanks for the replies so far…Im looking to go into some kind of business or economics program…could someone possibly compare the equivalent programs at these schools…these posts have been really helpful so far as these are all factors which ive been trying to weigh out in my mind…I understand the importance of academics but social factors are still really important to me…thanks again

What do you look for in social life?

As far as econ goes, Northwestern is highly ranked. Their team has won College Fed Challenge 2 years in a row. http://www.econ.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/newsletter.html

in terms of social life im looking for a good party scene (greek or not), social people in general and Ive been wondering about the prevelance of the nearby cities on the average students social life

Well, some people worry about Northwestern’s greek scene which, I believe, has been over-exaggerated by some who didn’t/don’t go to NU. I am one of the few that never drink or attend a frat party. But from what I’ve heard, NU’s frat parties are pretty mellow compared to other Big10 schools like Ohio State.

If you are not into the greek scene; there are also other parties held by non-frat types. Since NU has very strong music, art history, and performing arts programs (pretty much all across the board), there are also plenty of artsy/musical types and other groups.

Chicago downtown is about 40-min train ride from Evanston. Of course the uptown, which has many nice neighborhoods, are closer. The area around where Evanston and Chicago boarder is unforunately the only uptown area along the lakefront that is not considered nice. Many people don’t really go to downtown all that much esp when the weather is cold and many don’t feel like staying outside for longer than 15 mins (e.g. waiting on the train platform). There are plenty to do on campus anyway. Since the music and theater programs are among the best, there are concerts and plays of high caliber but at low cost all year round. Evanston downtown, which boarders NU campus, is pretty nice with good number of restaurants and coffee shops. It also has a Barnes & Nobles and a movie theater complex.

Hope that helps.

thanks alot for the info sam…are you a student there?..which school would you all recommend for a potential business/economics major

Northwestern and Gtown are better than Emory, I’d say NU is the best among this group.

for business or for the whole package?

For economics without a doubt Northwestern.

The U.S. News’ Peer Assessment Score (meant to be a measure of prestige): (x/5.0)

NU: 4.4

Emory: 4.0

Georgetown: 4.0

If you want to major in business you go to Emory hands down. For one, Northwestern only offers a business MINOR. Secondly, Emory is ranked 18th for Undergrad Business and Georgetown is ranked 26th (according the U.S. News).

There is hardly a “better” school in this group. Granted Northwestern is considered closer to “IVY status” and Georgetown has a lower acceptance rate than Emory, there is no clear winner. Visit all three schools because they are amazingly different academically and geographically.

Im surprised that Gtown and Emory r considered to be at the same level of prestige…I understand the undergrad business rankings but I have read not to look too deeply into those…will any of those schools put me in a better place in the business world coming out of college?
