NOT getting a request for recommendation letters...good or bad sign?

Seeing all these posts about requests for rec letters makes me wonder something. Let’s say a student has strong gpa, high SAT & SAT2 scores, rigorous courses, stellar ECs in intended majjor…and does NOT get a request for recommendation letters (which are supposed to be for the 20% who are borderline). Does that mean the student is likely to be admitted?

A little worried. EECS applicant, so ultra competitive.

Nobody knows at this point. It is a guessing game. Logically, why would they want to do an additional work and read so many LOR if applicant is 100% in? It might be an automated system request based on GPA, test scores and anything number related. Plus major. Like EECS and Chemical Engineering are the most difficult to get in.

Thanks…that’s what worries me. What if the numbers pass an automated system so no request of rec letters is generated. But then when the adcoms read the ECs and personal statements, they are comparing that app with other applicants who now also have 2 rec letters in their file.

I realize no one knows. It’s just that when you hit the submit button and feel like the app has gone into a big black hole, you tend to obsess about these things. LOL

This is the first time they have ever done this - so take it all with a grain of salt. No one knows what any of it means. Don’t worry. Maybe your child is a definite!

@2018eastorwest What do you mean first time? I think they have asked for recommendation in preivous yeras.

I have heard that they have used supplementals in the past which contained extra questions, midyear grade reports, and maybe recommendations too, but that was later in the process and for like 6% of their applicants who were “on the bubble” but not in. They scrapped the supps and started a new process this year by asking for recs early in the process, supposedly from about 20% of the applicants.

@2018eastorwest is correct ^^^^
