Not Getting Enough Aid and Problem with Noncustodial Parent

Hello,
I’ve been accepted to schools like U Mich, U Miami, Wash U, Carnegie Mellon, and Berkeley so far. The aid I’ve received from these institutions so far has been only about 20% of the COA, mostly loans and for Wash U and Miami I got scholarships. I’m not sure how they calculated it, since my mother doesn’t make that much (the only thing is our house is worth a good amount), and I can’t afford these schools. I’m waiting only on Ivies (I was waitlisted at Duke), who purportedly give good aid. What I think the problem is that these schools still haven’t received my non custodial parent’s 2015 tax return (he just turned it in to IDOC). Does anyone know if that could be a reason I’ve been given little aid (I’ve only been given scholarships or loans, no grants)? Anyone with similar situations?

The colleges expect your father to contribute to your college education so his income (and his wife, if he’s remarried) is factored into what they calculate your need to be. Will he contribute? And if so, will it be enough to make these schools affordable? You will have the same problem with the Ivies, if you are admitted, unfortunately.

Well…lets start with Berkeley. Didn’t they just vote to give NO need based aid to OOS student beginning with this admissions round? So at Berkeley, you can expect to receive no need based aid.

Michigan does not guarantee to meet full need for OOS students…they are trying to get close to that…but haven’t met that bar…yet.

Carnegie Mellon meets full need for ED accepted students, but this is not a guarantee for other admitted students.

U if Miami does not guarantee to meet full financial need…and they don’t.

The above are likely the reasons you didn’t get the aid you thought you might from those schools.

Now to your question…if the school REQUIRES non-custodial parent profile for determination of institutional need based aid…AND supporting documents…then your aid application for institutional aid is not complete until those documents are received by the college.

It sounds like you may have missed their deadlines…so call the schools and ask the implications of a late submission if you have missed the deadlines.

Just curious…what is your GPA…because your 730CR and even higher math SAT scores sound great. Did you apply to any colleges where you would get significant MERIT aid (if your GPA is also high)? .

@thumper1 My unweighted GPA is 4.00 , and I have called the admissions offices. They said they will accept the late documents, and they can’t guarantee anything. It just really sucks that even though my mom and I got our part in on time, my father didn’t.

Well…just wait and see. Does your dad have significant income?

I don’t think he does, but I have no way of knowing.

Wel…at this point you just have to wait and see. I hope you get yoir financial aid packages before you have to make a decision for May 1 about matriculation.

Thanks, I hope so too
