Not going after sending acceptance letter?

Hello I was wondering if it’s illegal or something to not go to a college after sending in the acceptance letter w/ the matriculation money?

I’ve set up a student ID, financial aid, and even an orientation for that school, but my #1 school just send me an acceptance letter VERY late and I need to go there instead.

Seams to me like an acceptance letter is some sort of contract? I would prob be helping someone on the wait list though…not sure how this works.

Thank you.

Sure, you can rescind your acceptance of admission. Colleges expect that to happen. You’ll need to check about whether you can get your deposit back, though. Make sure everything is in order with your new school first, though.

As long as you don’t accept 2 schools at the same time, there’s nothing wrong with withdrawing an acceptance so you can go elsewhere. Happens all the time when students get off waitlists. All that happens is that you’ll probably lose your deposit.

But make sure you let the school that you are not going know about it. There may be people waiting to get in and a space may open up after you leave.

well here is my situation:

i’m accepted to university A and waitlisted at university B. i put down an enrollment deposit at univ A and am still waiting to hear back from univ B. i want to defer admission for a year and univ A allows this but requires me to sign an agreement form that states “we expect that you will not apply to other colleges during the year, and that you will not enroll at another college as a degree-seeking candidate. We further require that you not hold a deferral at another institution.” the deadline for this form is june 1. what happens if i am accepted at univ B after i snd in this form?

tryin2bcool: talk to school A. They want to allot your spot to someone else if need be: you need to keep your options open and clear. Communication with them should sort it all out. Good luck to you

Thanks guys, I’ll contact my school so they can tell some lucky fella they got in vtech.

Tryntobecool “what happens if i am accepted at univ B after i snd in this form?”

If you send in the form, you are expected to withdraw your other applications since you are promising to attend University A after your gap year.

You could stay on College B’s waitlist until you send the form in or until June 1. The minute you send in the form, though, you need to withdraw from College B’s waitlist.
